Having been riding since October last year I think I have done very well not getting any dreaded p words until now.

Recently bought a new wheel set and when I bought them the tyres and tubes where already fitted.

Last week I go to take the bike out for a quick evening blat and low and behold the front tyre was flat. Took it indoors and removed the tyre to find that the hole had been caused by the tube catching the inside of the rim and being pierced by the spoke. On closer inspection after removing what can only be described as a posties rubber band I noticed that the rim tape only covered 70% of the rim. So a quick online shopping spree later a new set of rim tape purchased along with a new set of tyre leversion (the other set snapped) I replaced the tape and off I go.

Today I was getting everything ready for a early 50 miler tommorow and putting the bike in the car when I noticed I had a flat on the rear. Same process take wheel indoors check the tyre for any obvious thorns glass etc nothing. Take tyre off and low and behold the same issue but this time the tape is all the way around. So the spare rim tape has been fitted and fingers crossed no more issues.

So glad I sorted myself out before the morning.

On a plus side I am now fully capable of sorting a flat in less than 20 mins well in the comfort of the house.

When the boy wonder bought himself a hybrid to get to 6th form on he had a spate of punctures within the first few weeks. As you've found, the rim tape was woeful and the tyres paper thin.

Built to a price point.

Yeah that's very ture. Ironically the tyres are meant to be very resistant to punctures and partly the reason I asked for them. The rim tape was a very cheap blue felt like tape with a rubber band over the top.

Decided to purchase some vittoria pro rim tape which was a totally arse to fit and ended up giving myself a blood blister where I caught my finger in between the rim and tape. But all fitted now so fingers and toes crossed.

Would you name and shame these people skimping on rim tape, please? I'm sure others would rather avoid such corner cutters.
Popped into halfords today, as my wife was visiting H&M, and Next, and a few other places, thinking they might have some rim tape, conti at least. Nope. But they did have something blue that looked suspiciously like a rubber band.

Going to order some proper Velox or Vittoria rim tape online.

I suffered a puncture just a couple of hundred metres from home on friday, it was the tiniest sliver of glass that had worked its way into my tyre and caused a tiny cut in the inner tube. I have now ordered a pair of Schwalbe Lugano tyres (with kevlar belt) to replace the current tyres.

It's still worth checking the tyre periodically for small bits of glass or thorn and picking them out if you find them. They could still work their way through or around the kevlar belt given time.

2 in a couple of weeks mtfu ! i had 2 in less than a mile the other week .
That far? Had two in the space of 1/4 mile earlier this year, a truly appalling cinder "road" however.

I've done that too, about half a mile from Nice airport on the way home.
Big gashes (2 - 3 ") in both tyres, punctured the rim tape, and a gouge in the side of one rim that took 6 months to wear smooth. Fortunately I had a spare tyre, so that replaced the worst gashed tyre, which I then cut a section out of to boot the gash in the other.

Another time, I'd just finished changing the tube for a rear puncture when I realised I could still hear a faint hissing, which turned out to be in the front. No obvious heap of broken glass or hedge clippings that I'd seen.

2 in a 1/4 mile ? You don't know your born, we used to pray for 2 in a 1/4 mile. When I were a lad we got a puncture and then another getting off the bike, another rolling it t' side of road and another 2 just turning bike upside down to repair..,whilst having stones thrown at thi, and been beaten with sticks whilst a rabid dog chewed our cycle clips from bottom of our pants. Then it would sink it's teeth into back tyre for another puncture !!!!

Yeah alright 2 in 2 weeks is a little lame I must admit but I don't fancy two at the same time that just sounds horrific especially as it's only the second time replacing a tube.

Suppose at least I now know how to do it and won't be stood on the side of the road scratching my head or more likely swearing very loudly.

also available in orange
I've got some of them and they are really crap, honestly they get punctures all the time they are like tissue paper.I had 3 in a week when I had them on my bike, I've swapped for Gatorskin Hardshell which are much better.

Agreed, but I didn't find Gatorskins much better, plus they don't have great grip in the wet. My own personal favourite for road tyres that keep on rolling is Schwalbe Duranos.

I and others find Vittoria Rubinos pretty puncture resistant. And very inexpensive to boot (under a tenner for the wired). Come in 23, 25, 28mm variants
