If some are just watching I player, tv etc. how do you train to improve fitness, strength etc.

I assume strength you need higher resistance or the front wheel raising?
Fitness, keep level of HR for specific duration
Intensity, sprints and sweat your backside off lol

Can you measure distance on turbo trainer via garmin edge?

Thanks for that, I had already heard about it, but a bit suspicious (my nature maybe;)), also a bit IT challenged. I have english TV and use a humax freesat HD box with recording function, so I manage to get most stuff, but when I do miss something it is frustating not to get Iplayer. I know I can pay for that as well, but with work, family, cycling etc..........

I, well my wife, uses Myexpatnetwork to watch UK tv, it's works very well.

rather like cycling in a circuit - 0 miles... you can in theory measure 'how far' if you have something that measures rear wheel rotation (usually cadence monitors such as mine - cateye strada cadence) and have mounted the wheel rotation counter on the rear wheel, but the work outs are not compariable. Turbo trainers are more of a work out if you try rather than cycling casually whilst watching TV/film.

Though I will say, you will be stunned as to how low the distance is compared to how tired/knackered/exhausted and sweaty you are.

You can also get some training mp3s, or other such music that has sprint sections buit into it. I off and on use Audio Fuel as one for training which the 100 mins one always leaves me knackered afterwards.

Yes you can. Turn the GPS off which will take speed off your GSC10 sensor/other make assuming you have one.

I will state again, as BNY did, Speed and distance on turbos is absolutely, irrefutably meaningless.

Listening to an mp3 player sounds like a good idea but what tunes do you guys listen to to motivate you during training?
My legs screaming and heart thumping. No musician has ever wrote such a symphony

Try "Sweet Oblivious Antidote" by Perpetual Groove., especially track 3 "Sun Dog". It's mental. :hyper:
And if you want a complete work-out in one track, you must listen to The Chemical Brothers' "Sunshine Underground".

Had my second 'journey' last night. Tried the brick and it really stopped the front wheel 'twist' also managed to listened to a comedy podcast, but had to have it quite loud to hear it - think I prefer music, which is what I'll do again next time. Also sweated pig-like again, which makes me feel self righteous when I finished, although Map My Ride only works out calories at 176 for 32 minutes. Sure felt harder than that

Thanks guys for such an interesting thread.

Me, Tibetan Techno, ZZ top , Apocalypse now and tracks from Last of the Mohican's.

The only reason I measure Time distance and calories burned - ( doesn't matter if they are accurate even , which they probably aren't ) - is they are a measure of performance. - If this week I do 40k in 1hr and burn 1000cals (I'm probably not doing any of these things in reality) - but when I cycle next week - thats my target, to attain, better or flunk completely.

How else do you measure your performance on a bike that goes nowhere?
40k 1hour is a constant 24mph - theres no way I can do that on a real bike on the road. - 17mph is my norm on the road.
I suppose I could do it on number of buckets of sweat I produce each time, must be 2 or 3 fair size buckets.

so how else do you measure your performance on the old turbo.
