set the fan up behind you, everyone loves a tailwind.

I assume you're joking - but seriously, don't try that. The fan is there to provide a cooling airflow, not to simulate a tail wind, which is pretty pointless if you are stationary. Put the fan in front and have it blowing over you, for obvious reasons.

It doesn't matter where the fan is so long as it cools you, I put mine off to one side to avoid cat fur and other home debris being blown into my sweaty face!

One thing I would recommend, if you are going to be using the turbo a lot, is to buy a rear tyre specifically for the turbo. This will reduce noise and more importantly not wear out your (presumably) more expensive rear road tyre (this can happen very quickly on a turbo. Other than that, enjoy.

The first time I used my turbo, I dressed like it was winter outside (in fact it was winter). But soon regretted it. In no time at all, the floor was puddled in sweat. Lesson learnt, and now I wear much less.
Re: levelling the bike. I put an old house brick under the front tyre. The groove in the top of the brick is the perfect shape and size to support the wheel, and it's exactly the right height! No tyre wear yet, no wobble, and no cost!

I thought i was the only one smart enough to use a house brick.

get an mp3 player and goood music.

I wear a sweat band (no I don't wear a helmet on my turbo trainer - I will take the risk-even though I have crashed it once)
and I sweat - like a lot of pigs.
I'm ussually stripped down to shorts only in about 5minutes. -
enjoy it , it's supposed to be fun!?

How do you crash a turbo. I did have some music on, when my podcast I thought I'd downloaded wasn't there! Also trying to get head round a new ipad

At the minute I've got my old bike on the turbo to see how that goes. No special tyres on that one and it doesn't appear to be noisy either, so that's great.

I've been using my Turbo since Christmas and love it. I just grab my laptop and a bottle of water then click on the iplayer and choose which comedy prog' I'm going to watch. The best bit is all you need do is choose an appropriate length programme to suit how much time your going to spend on that session! Dads Army 30mins, Mock the week 1 hour (although I only made 45 minutes worth) I've done about 9 sessions now ! I'm looking forward to feature length films soon, I'm eventually aiming for the Lord of the rings trilogy and Star wars episodes 1 to 6 in preparation for the spring arriving! I've actually not gone out on the road tonight just so I can catch up with the first episode of the new series of pramface!! You gotta laugh! :bicycle: No really, you've got to!

I keep an old bike on the turbo, listen to music on an MP3 player, use a heart rate monitor to work to heart zones and have a towel for moping up the sweat, I must get something to protect the floor of the shed at some point. I've had turbo trainers since the early 1990's, haven't always used them mind, and though they're not my favourite instrument of torture, an hour in the shed listening to music whilst watching a heart monitor by torch light isn't the most fun way to pass the time but I do like that little bit of extra fitness it gives me.

Try getting off with one foot still clipped in - half way off I had one of those 'Oh No' moments and over I went.

I must admit I need drive to get me going on the turbo , hench heavy metal - played Loud.
my wife finds turbo's boring but she reads a book and hardly breaks a sweat. - I'm slowely getting her into music and pedalling a bit faster. As unless you want to sit on it for 3 hours , I tend to regard Turbo as a condensed ride, same distance in a half of the time. - my normal ride on the turbo is 40k in an hour which would take 2hours+ on the road , with hills and things thrown in.

except that distance ridden on a turbo is completely meaningless...

Exactly, distance and speed (unless your turbo has a very well defined and consistent power curve such that you can use speed to infer power) on a turbo is absolutelly meaningless. Turbo training should be quantified on a duration at intensity basis!

you probably know all this but just in case, to get BBC iplayer, ITV player, 4OD and 5 on demand in france download EXPAT SHIELD, gives you an uk ip address for free, only thing to remember is only turn on when needed..or to watch english tv live, watch it on FILMON, just sign up, watching in SD is free HD is the pay option.

Thanks for that, I had already heard about it, but a bit suspicious (my nature maybe;)), also a bit IT challenged. I have english TV and use a humax freesat HD box with recording function, so I manage to get most stuff, but when I do miss something it is frustating not to get Iplayer. I know I can pay for that as well, but with work, family, cycling etc..........
