i have said it before and will say it again - if you had told me a few years ago i was going to meet lanky gits on the internet , go on holiday with them , and enjoy every single minute , i would have said you were crackers
I can't say much that Tommy hasnt - except i am under no illusion - i was a bit stronger on the ups riding with a Tommy who had only just took his flip flops off after 3 weeks sunning himself , Adam has only just started training and you can just sense at full power he is gonna storm long weekend , Kip was full of cold what doesnt help one bit !and Bobs only got one leg !
Its fantastic to know whatever i do Tommy is there - apart from when he grabs the saddle !
i don't know why i try to the point of breaking going up - maybe its an age thing ( hope i soon fancy buying a harley instead !)
its such a buzz to have heart feeling like its coming through your ribs
views brilliant
company brilliant
organizing brilliant
sarcasm - off the scale
cant recommend it enough to anyone sitting on the fence
and let it go on record - i asked Tommy if we could stop for a minute up serrene !
and Bob has been unfairly labelled as lanky git
thanks for all the effort everyone put in to make it possible and for Pauls local knowledge
Didn't ride much with Andy so cant comment but well done to him as he took his highest climb from 600ft to 4111ft !
another sucessful trip and i really hope theres more

Well, all I want to say is I only fell behind Tommy and Lee coz they wouldn’t stop talking ;) I needed some peace to enjoy the climbs ^_^

I enjoyed all the climbing and the descending. Alp D Huez is of course iconic and what a blast to get up that in a decent time and in the company of Adam who didn’t seem to mind that most of the time I ride in silence. I have no idea how Adam could be so strong on so little biking:notworthy:

But the day that will linger long in the memory is the ride out to La Confession, a descent down a grave road then turning and climbing back up before taking a balcony road round to Sarenne. Truly glorious riding with fabulous views. We got lost a few times and ended up cycling then walking along an off road track that ended abruptly in trees. Doubling back we found our way round to the dam and then onto Sarenne. I blew up almost immediately. Tommy describes seeing me toil and I have no doubt it’s the hardest climb I have done, not in terms of meters climbed but because near enough every turn of the pedals was an exercise in struggle. I know how slow I went at times but I could not have gone faster. Fortunately I was blessed with a climb of great beauty, traffic less, every switch back or turn offering up another vista to gawp at or admire. It’s at times like that it’s difficult for this old socialist not to wonder at the forces of creation at play...
All I can say is that raching the summit was an emotional experience and one sharpened by the spectacular views from the top.

I started the sketchy but glorious descent back to the chalet only to see Adam coming back to get me. Top bloke that Adam:thumbsup:

I was pretty much broken for the last day of riding and after a descent of Huez was very tempted to simply turn and ride back up on and try and set a better time. But I am glad I joined Lee and Tommy for a lovely ride up Ornon and fast descent before turning back for Huez. My tummy had already begun to rumble and as Tommy and Lee shot off I began to worry about what was going to happen. I lasted till Dutch Corner.Where better to have a Dimoulin moment? Fortunately the toilet at turn 8 was open and empty although lockless and I was troubled by someone else trying to get in

Overall a great trip, excellent company and great efforts by everyone regardless of when they finished on any particular climb.

You all should join one of these trips. Ok, you will get the P taken out of you, that’s a given. But you will also find great company, camaraderie and support from people you know, albeit they are all dodgy geezers you have met on the Internet.
Still, You cannot really buy that.

Great write ups guys, sounds like you all had an amazing time. For now I can only look on and read your comments joining you, even though I'd love to, is not possible. Maybe one day ... until then I'll try and make as many one day rides in the UK as I can and definitely continue to ride online. :okay:

Thanks for the great write-ups guys. Please do keep inviting me Tommy - I'm determined to make it to the alps with you guys one of these days!

There’s still places available for next years trip. 7 days, end of June if anyone fancies it. All you guys are welcome to join myself, Berty and Breedon.

I think you’ve already said that’s going to be tough for you this time. But it’ll definitely happen at some point Bridgy! And it’ll be worth the wait :okay:

I'm going to try to mount the cube on the kickr 18 and have a play on some of the shorter climbs in BRVR or Bkool. Could be interesting

Er yeah I'm only gonna be partially successful. As a standard bike it'll be fine.

As an e-bike not so much . There's a magnet on a spoke on the rear wheel that a sensor on the left chainstay picks up to give speed values by the looks of it. No magnet pick up no assist. I can't try taping the magnet to the left crank arm because the sensor is too far back, I'd need 210mm crank arms to try that . Taping the magnet to my shoe will not work either because the chainstay is too thick for the magnet used. I may have to try a much stronger magnet to see if I can fool the system .

That being said. On a wheel on trainer like a bkool, wahoo snap, tacx vortex etc. you'll get the assist. bruv can I borrow my pro for a few days

Great write ups guys!

Takes me back to some great memories. I've been to the Alpe d'Huez area three times and there are some great rides around there.

Agree about everything you said about the Col de Sarenne. Definitely tougher than Alpe d'Huez, but great scenery and a fabulous ride across to Alpe d'Huez.

The balcony rides off Alpe d'Huez were favourites.

Each time we visited we stayed on Col d'Ornon 8kms from the start of the climb, so each day started and ended with a descent and a climb back.

I'd like to join a trip if I can, but could be difficult as I'v already got 2 different weeks pencilled in for next year.

The chalet we hired was at the top of alpe d’huez Del, opposite the helipad and airport at the mouth of the serene climb. So like you the last thing we did each day was climb a hill (something that caused mixed opinions amongst the guys ^_^)

D’huez was an absolute ghost town which was quite strange. But I can imagine it going a bit mental in the seasons either side so I’m quite glad we missed that I think.

It would be great to have you along next year Del! We’re gong on the 29th of June for 7 days. I think spaces will get filled, either by cc’ers or by guys who are members of the cycle club the organiser Nas belongs to. So have a think over the next few days maybe
