the only downside of spesh bikes I can see, and I've owned several and still have one in the family, is that everybody rides one.

That's the only downside i could find with it too, that and they all look very similar.

Gave this brief to the LBS, and they suggested a ridgeback voyage. I'm concerned about the weight of it and not meeting my 'nippy' criterea.
you're absolutely right. The Voyager is a nice bike, but it's an out-and-out tourer. Nippy it is not.

At the risk of bringing down the wrath of the steel brigade I'd go for a Boardman Comp from Halfords, but have it made up by a decent bike shop.

If you're near an Evans then look at the Pinnacle Sentinel 2010 - Shimano 105 at £650. Again, consider having it made up by a decent bike shop.
