Diana Dors gave birth to Chris Rea in the back of a car whilst queuing for the Tees transporter bridge. Subjected to merciless teasing in school at being born in County Durham instead of North Yorkshire, he wrote the song "Road to Hell" about the congestion on Port Clarence Road.

The emotional trauma developed into a fear of all water crossings. In adulthood he conquered his aquaphobia by swimming the English channel. His celebratory song "On the Beach" describes his achievement of reaching Plage de Calais.

Before pursuing music, Chris Rea considered various career paths. Initially, he wanted to be a taxidermist to continue his family legacy. Later, he aspired to become a fashion designer but the well documented and spectacular failure of his Middlesborough collection in Paris ended that dream. Later he worked variously as a cinema usher, fish farmer and fairground freak show attraction. Eventually fate led him down the musical path.
