Trouble eating on a ride.

500g bottle lasts me a couple of months because I only use this on long rides (over 50km), so never seems worth the hassle of experimenting to find the best recipe, mixing it up, etc.

Tried that once, suggest you do the same before taking it on a ride. [Searches for "puking" emoticon]. The non-caffeinated one is OK though.

I'll carry a bottle of plain water as well!
This one suits the puking emoticon (if you squint): :birthday:

Maybe it just me? I really do fill my cycle helmet with perspiration whenever the temperature is above 15c. :rain:

Or maybe its your helmet? Not wanting to have this thread moved to "Helmet Debates" but I sweat a lot when exercising too, and after reading some of the evidence for and against, and concluding that the protection offered by my helmet was, at best, minimal, I tried going without. A trad cotton cycling cap is so much more comfortable....

Ok, the results are in!

I went out on a 54 miler earlier after having porridge and tea from breakfast (at 12pm ... had a lay in).

I had a couple of swigs of the high5 caffeine stuff during the first hour but for once i didn't have the feeling that the
liquid going in was "just staying in my stomach".
A bit of swiss roll cake and a couple of biscuits at 30 miles, and then a few more swigs of the isotonic got me round.

Overall todays ride was far better than other 50 milers i've done, mainly from not feeling full of fluid.

Energy levels seemed fine, if it wasn't so darmed cold i would have done another 30 miles.

That's fairly high mileage you are putting in in these temp's and at this time of the year, what sort of average are you doing? I know that area fairly well, in the summer we cycled from Oakham to Sheringham and back on a Sat and Sun, always windy in the Wisbech area.

I'm averaging about 100 a week i suppose, mainly from 30 miler "training" rides round the fens.
I'm lucky to have "extra padding" by being overweight, meaning i can keep riding without too much cold discomfort.

As for the wind ... i've cycled in many parts of the uk and find the wind locally the most annoying!
Once you get just over the A10 into slightly hilly norfolk it dissipates quite a lot.

I haven't been over near oakham, the closest being morbourne/haddon last weekend. (West of peterborough).
I've cycled around sheringham, in fact if you'd like to try a scenic ride i can recommend the coast path from wells to sheringham.
Not many people can cycle up the last bit to the lookout tower west of sheringham due to its steepness! (On a mtb obviously).
The view from the lookout station, back towards wells:
