Every once in a while all the recordings disappear off my Humax PVR, and the recorder stops working. The first time it happened I tried a factory default reset which didn't work, so, resigned to having lost all the recordings anyway, I tried reformatting the disc, after which all the recordings reappeared in working order.

A factory reset on the Humax doesn't delete any recordings.

A factory reset on the Humax doesn't delete any recordings.

I haven't suggested that it would.

The recordings all 'vanished' by themselves, and the factory reset was an attempt to solve the problem before I resorted to reformatting the disk. The curious bit is why reformatting made them all reappear again still in working order.
