Journalists who write that someone:

”… was ordered to sign the sex offenders register.”

It’s a digital database, nobody signs it. Offenders’ names are added to it after conviction, whether they agree or not.

Here’s the latest example, relating to the recent release of Gary Glitter as reported by the BBC.

On his return to the UK in 2008, the former pop star was ordered to sign the sex offenders register.

That is only semi-true.

There is as you say, a national database on which the offenders name will be placed, but there is then a requirement that within 3 days of conviction, or release from prison if the sentence included imprisonment, the offender must present themselves at their local police station, and "sign" the register there, confirming their details including their address, passport details (if any) and details of any bank accounts or credit cards they hold.

The RSO attending a prescribed police station will be asked the required notifiable information (address, names used, passport, credit cards etc) for the completion of the relevant notification form. This is completed by the police officer and the RSO will be given the opportunity to sign it but it is not a legal obligation and no offence is committed on failure to sign.

What they are signing (if they agree to) is not the SOR.

So what exactly is the significance of a signature (so to speak) ?

When victims of crime are supported by specially trained officers!

You would hope so ..!

There isn't any as such. It is an offence not to register at the police station and give those details. That is what is considered "signing the register" even though no actual signature is required.

The police are required to give an acknowledgment in writing that the offender has registered correctly, which is the evidence if needed later.

Woke this morning to two messages from two different bidders on two different items currently for sale on ebay. Both asking me to cancel their bids as they claimed to have assured the items being something different to what they are. They couldn’t cancel themselves as there was less than 12 hours remaining.

Don’t know why it annoys me so much, but it does. It is ebay after all.
