I could never boil an egg
even had an argument about it at work
5 people told me it was easy and how could I be so dumb as to not be able to do it (N.B. I can cook most things)
so I demanded the method - and got 5 different ways - each of which was the only possible way!!!
Anyway - my wife has specified the correct manner which always works
First - put egg into cold water
start hob up
wait until properly boiling (the definition of which can vary the time by up to 1 minute!)
then leave for 5 minutes
take out on a slotted spoon and watch carefully - the water should evaporate in 5 seconds
any less and it need to go back in - I find 1 extra minute for every second over the 5 is slightly too much
I have never seen any other way of checking if it is hot enough at the end but this works for hard boiled but only just
I presume soft boiled would be about 3 seconds
as I don;t really like eggs like this I never do it for myself - hence not knowing the correct way to cook them
This is a pretty reliable method and doesn't require too much attention or guess work
Pan with half an inch of boiling water
Place eggs from the fridge (not room temp') in the water and cover with lid and hit the stopwatch, when steam has built up again reduce heat making sure to keep the steam up but don't use too much heat.
At 6 minutes and 30 seconds remove from heat, walk to sink and run cold water over the eggs for a few seconds to stop the cooking process.
A few seconds here or there makes a big difference but you soon get a feel for it.
