The purest 'stainless steel ' is not magnetic, or very little, which is why electric guitar and bass strings are not made from it.

This is the argument I have - people thinking the more "pure" stainless steel is -the less magnetic it is.

There are five different types of stainless steel (which can be subdivided into separtate grades therof).

They are made in different ways, from different things, for different purposes.

As a result, some are less magnetic than others

Saying something made up of various elements is "pure" is like saying "pure cake"

Understood, I'm aware it's an alloy. The austenitic version has very little ferritic response. That's the most corrosion resistant AIUI, and the most unsuitable for strings.

It has to be...

I can ground it enough to stop the noise, I just need to get the ground itself to!

quick google suggests it's a shielding issue rather than a grounding one...

  • If your bass hums once you touch the strings (but is otherwise quiet), you have a grounding issue.
  • If your instrument hums but becomes quiet once you touch the strings, you have a shielding issue.
