Much as i like having a MTB with disc brakes its fecking heavy and slow compared to my road bikes, even looking at cheap wheels on flea bay at moment !

+1 on the against front if you are planning serious use of the bike, so in other words more than one a week... Mine lasted 6 months with me replacing the wheel bearings and regreasing them every 4-6 weeks... Retruing was also a common theme. My oh's lasted 2 years with several retrues in that time and a couple of new ways of wheels bearings. B he only used it once a week or so.

problem at that end of the market is that there is limited choice. Thanks to reviews here and online I decided against the triban wheel. Reviews for Wilkinsons wheels were generally much better so that is what I have ordered. This will provide a stop gap for me while I save some pennies for a decent wheelset.

Is it really true that wheels nowadays are such poor quality.? I read this with some amusement as most of my wheels are 25+ years old with no problems save a slight retrue in some cases when acquired.

Yes, definitely. This even applies to some of the so called better wheels. Hubs made of cheese, rims that are so thin they wear out in no time, and spokes that break at the drop of a hat. I have actually found that some of the cheaper wheels can be better than some expensive wheels. They are not pared down to meet the weight expectations of wannabe racing cyclists so the metalwork is more robust. I agree entirely with Cycleops about the quality of older wheels. Back in the 60's and 70's all wheels needed was an annual grease up and they would last years, but then so would headsets and bottom brackets. Something has certainly changed in bike manufacturing and not for the better. It is built in obsolescence gone crazy.

So if anyone wants to send me their triban wheels for winter use
Only if you want to buy the triban 3 attached to the r501s that it now has and is now a homeless bike in need of some tlc that i am not going to be able to give it... it will be going up for sale when I can photo it along with the replacement cassette and chain... Just needs new chainset... Note to self to see if next weekend I am well enough to get said photos...

If i could i would but i think S-1 would be reached if i got any more bikes !
Although TBH i doubt its any better than my self build frame from @Saluki , which according to the bathroom scales is 10 kg with the rack on , equipped with claris and r501s which is what i could do with cheap wheels for as i do not to destroy them over winter .

Tbh I was being cheeky... The plan is to pretty much 'flog' it with the wheels, however if you do want it for the wheels pm me and we can talk... It is a large frame though and I don't remember you being that tall! The original plan had been in would do it up with a complete new drive chain and sell it... By think the reality now is that with me in hospital waiting for discharge and not able to walk far key alone renovate a bike, it will be a sell it as is and if person wants the parts we have (cassette & chain) then fine otherwise they will be up on the boards here when I can in the new year. But wheels are 10 months old and not required on new bike because it had come with fulcrum racing sports and takes an 11 speed cassette

I got my new wheel today, ordered through my local LBS. It was advertised as a Wilkinson wheel but came as a Weinmann. It's OLN was 130mm but my dropouts were 126mm so I had to spread them a little. No problem on a steel frame and only 2mm each side. Anyway that done I fitted the wheel but the QR didn't want to "bite" and lock in. The hollow wheel spindle is protruding through the dropouts on both sides by a couple of mm. I have had this before on other bikes and I think the spindle prevents the QR from closing fully. A thin washer each side allowed it all to fit nicely so when I am in the mood I will undo the outer serrated locknuts and put the washer behind them. Hopefully this will cure the issue. I have looked at the dropouts on my Trek and on my Raleigh MTB and the metal is thicker than that on the Peugeot, so I guess that answers why the spindle isn't a perfect fit.
