I set off out on my newly refurbished Peugeot this morning for it's inaugural ride, got half a mile up the road and the chain started slipping on the freewheel. It was really bad on the middle 4 sprockets (out of 6), you could watch the chain actually skipping over the teeth. It is a new chain so I guess the freewheel has come to the end of the road. Problem is the hub is one of the old Heliomatic things that use a freewheel now as rare as hens teeth and probably a similar price. I have seen a new freewheel advertised at £50 odd. I guess now the easiest route is to get a new wheel with standard screw-on hub. I have a couple of unused 6 speed Shimano freewheels.

Decathlon are opening a new store in Harlow on Thursday so I think I will hang on and see what they have. They advertise a Triban wheel which looks like it will do the job so it will be a good chance to see what they have to offer.

Can only speak from my experience of owning a Triban3 but the wheels that came with it were made of cheese! Rim failed on the rear after about 300 miles and it went in the bin

Oops, worth knowing!! I will now wait for someone to come and tell us they have cycled three times round the world on theirs and it still shines
I will have to have a look at the reviews.

I saw the reviews on the decathlon site, one good one bad. Coupled with @Easytigers experience makes it 2 against 1. On one hand I find it a little encouraging that not many people have complained bearing in mind that it is when things go wrong that people rush to review sites. I will think about it and also look at what esle is about in the bargain basement range.

Why don't you just get a new hub and have your existing rim laced on? You could save a bit by taking the old hub off yourself.

Hi there, thought it was just worth saying that it was just one pair of wheels and I'm sure there are bad batches in any run of products. Also, they were the stock wheels that came with the Triban3 so might not be the same model that you're looking at.

The Triban wheels were problematic for a good number of owners and many felt that wheel upgrades were the first thing to change. I had a Triban for appx a year before having to change to a recumbent. I never had any problems with the wheels whatsoever and nor has my son who still owns the Triban. Having said that, I did re-grease the hubs a few weeks after buying the bike because many people were reporting issues due to lack of grease......and mine had about as much grease as a chip cooked in Mazola (does Mazola still exist or am I just showing my age?)

I bought some triban wheels as a winter set and sold them as the old set were better than the triban basic wheels .
My "old " set were from wooolyhatshop.com and although basic did the job and lasted .
Any good ?

At least they tell you it's a 130mm OLN - the others don't bother to mention the OLN, which is potentially rather important when putting a new wheel on an old bike.

I agree entirely about the OLN. Also I wish they would mention the wheel width.

It's on the wheels that Decathlon really save money. A Triban front wheel costs £25. Those on my son's Triban 3 needed replacing after a couple of months.
