At some point in then near future I will need to replace the crankset / chainwheels on my 2009 Trek 7.3 FX.
Replacing just the chainwheels would be OK, but it looks to be cheaper to just replace the whole crankset.
I would like to retain the current gearing if possible (as as near as I can). The bike uses the old style square BB attachment method.
I would also like to keep the chainguard as I often ride casually with long trousers on. I can do this either by buying a crankset with a chaingaurd fitted, or one that will accept the current one (which is held on by 4 screws).
The trouble is that getting cranksets / chainwheels is difficult as the chainwheel tooth sizes are somwhere between road and MTB (which is kind of expected for a hybrid).
The standard crankset is a Shimano Acera M361 with 48/38/28 rings.
After much trawling of the internet, I have found a orginal OEM crankset.
Now I have not had any issues with the current crankset regarding it's quality, so I would be happy to replace like with like. But just out of interest, I might get something a bit better.
There seems to be a Shimano Alvio 411, but it is quite difficult to get hold of.
A hollowtech deore would be nice as it would save a bit of weight, but I cannot find any with the correct gearing.
Any suggestions?

Replace like for like. If you had no problems with the first set why spend more money upgrading a part which will give very little, if any, noticeable performance increase.
That's what I'd do...
