what, real gold on a 50 squid bike??

seriously though, i was a little tempted to get one just to try a drop barred bike when they were on that offer. it wouldnt take many miles to make back 50..- IMO you probably are nearly there..

After a few months sitting unused in the corner of the shed, the ToysRUS machine has been put back into service. It's now in winter trim, wearing mudguards (a squeeze to fit, but we got there in the end) and flat bars. Will probably also replace the silly standard chainset with something more suitably geared, when I can be bothered.
Anyway, 15 miles clocked today and running well.

30-odd miles and you're replacing the chainset?
Bargain.

in fairness, he didn't say the chainset was worn out, just that the gearing was unsuitable. you only find out that from experience unless you have a prior knowledge of gear ratios etc.

i've been that soldier, trying to go up stupidly steep climbs with (what turned out to be) 42-25. i went for triple and the replaced chainset was certainly in no way worn. it's now been put on another bike.

I still say 'dont knock it' ...
One of the guys at work brought one last year. After i fettled the rear wheel bearings (which were graunchy, when new) its worked fine ever since, he still commutes on it now, and its not falling to bits.
The gearing will be wrong once you (he) got some speed and stamina, but he's still happy with it.

Would i buy one ? ...no
Is it good VFM...debatable.
Was it a waste of money..no

It fills a niche...no more, no less.

I wouldn't knock. I have a fairly low end MTB. It was a 16th birthday present. I rode it a lot at the time. My brother then used it quite a bit and then it sat in the garage for years until I dusted it down when I decided to start cycling again. I estimate about 3000 miles under it now, about 1,200 in the past 6 months. It's been reliable, the only thing I had to put on it was a new (5 speed block) freewheel as the bearing went in the original. I replaced the chain at the same time although it wasn't too bad. It's had other things like brake pads but so would any bike. I've replaced the tyres with road tyres and fitted mudguards years ago as I mostly ride it on the road, not because the original tyres were worn out. Okay, it's heavy and not very fast but it is still a perfectly serviceable bike, nice and comfortable to ride, reliable, sturdy, a good range of gears and is perfectly adequete for most peoples needs. I would have to say it was good value for money and has given good service.

I now ride my Carlton more often but only because I now feel fit enough to benefit from something a bit lighter.

Another 40 miles since the last report. Laziness means I still haven't swapped the chainset... and, as someone said, I'm not changing because of wear, just that the rings and pedal cranks are really more suited to a MB. Not sure if all these 'Triax' bikes had the same stuff parts. Could be that they just put on anything to hand.
