Just noticed that ToysRus's super-cheapo road bike is back, now on offer for a few pence short of £100... Makes me rather pleased I bought mine for fifty quid in their August sale!
Anyone else succumbed yet?

£100 was a lot of money in 1970

The components are a bit bling.

What was it Mr Ratner said about his 99p gold ear rings?

'Total cr*p'

I had no idea black tyres made you go faster.

You're just jealous! Sneer all you like, but I can't see how this isn't a bargain. Only clocked about 100 miles on it at the moment, but no probs so far. In fact, I've had more trouble with expensive bikes bought from LBSs.

the usual observation is that at that price components have to be cheaply made using inferior materials and possibly design so if works ok, great but you;re going to see failures and wear much quicker than on a more expensive bike

that said, good luck and let us know how it goes

I wasn't sneering - I was just commenting - nothing wrong with downtube shifters, much easier to fix if they go wrong !

Yep, mine worked in 1980 and they still work on my bike 28 years later :bravo:

Vitesse- I'd be interested to know how it shapes up once you've had it a while. What kind of use have you been putting it to?

i'd be tempted to upgrade the brake calipers to dual pivot, rather than side pull. you could probably get some proper aero brake levers off ebay for buttons (i've actually got a pair in the shed that could do with re-homing) and you'll find that the bike behaves a lot better under braking, which in turn will help give you the confidence to ride it quicker.

Hi Alec, I upgraded my 1980's dawes 531 from the old weinmann brakes to some 105's that I picked up recently and I have been looking for some aero levers. Are you looking to sell them, on ?

Some of the components, including the frame, from what I've seen so far, are surprisingly good, some are, errm, OK-ish. I checked it over before attempting to go for the maiden ride (and to be honest I'd do the same with any new bike, wherever it came from), and found a few faults: overtight wheel bearing, slightly overtight b/bracket (good old cups 'n' cones!), front wheel a bit out of round (but no loose spokes and true-able when I can be bothered).
The rest seemed fine. Didn't even need to adjust the gears, which could mean that downtube shifters aren't so dumb!
A 15m shakedown ride proved that it works fine as a bicycle, and I haven't needed to do anything since apart from pedal it.
It does have a few odd features - tiny front chainwheels that seem to have come off a mountain bike, steel handlebars, and inner tubes with Schrader valves.
So far, so good, then, although maybe 125m doesn't prove much. As I have ten other bikes, it won't be clocking huge distances, but I'll keep you posted on developments.

Most of my miles are fairly gentle rural stuff. Not many hills, so I won't have much use for the ridiculously low gears!

There seems to be a few bike snobs on here at times. I've done hundreds of miles on a new £40 MTB with no problems at all. But I did oil and grease the dry BB and cables. Not as light or smooth as my more expensive machines but they seem to do the job they are intended for. Plus no problems with the shimano gearing unlike my £600 tourer.
