It was a popular race with the peloton though. Short stages, short transfers, safe wide roads that are in good nick, and good food. I can see the attraction for them at least.

Mostly maybe. All I heard this year was riders moaning about the fact that it took longer to get from the Airport to the Hotel than the flight itself and the dreadful air quality.
