Some of these suggestions are quite a way from Northallerton, much as I like a bit of Wensleydale and Ginger, Gromit. Betty’s tea rooms offers up market fat rascals, other than that it’s just a pleasant market town which is the home of North Yorkshire county council for some reason. Location is excellent though for a cycle trip.

Northallerton is about 20 mins away from me.

Northallerton itself has a cool bike shop called Cowleys Cycles. It is mainly a repair shop and they do hub gears for SA etc. they service my 1980’s hub for me!

Not far from Northallerton is;

Osmotherly which has a nice walk around the reservoir (Cod Beck).

Mount Grace Priory (only accessed from A19 southbound).

Roots farm shop and cafe in Rounton (big for cyclists). You can cycle to it via Brompton.

If you have young children in the family there is a cracking shop called Adventure Toys where you can buy toys for them and also refurbished garden toys. It is in Brompton.

If you are willing to travel a bit, about 30 mins or so on back roads you can make your way to Stokesley (Westbrook Cycles) where there are lots of lovely cafes and restaurants but similar vibe to Northallerton.

A further 5 mins or so takes you to Great Ayton where there is the famous Petchers Pie and Suggitts cafe and ice cream shop.

Just outside of Great Ayton in Little Ayton is Fletchers farm shop and a nice walk up to Roseberry Topping and if you fancy making it a bit longer extend out to Captain Cooks Monument and/or the old Bilsdale TV aerial station (it burned down).

Northallerton itself has a market and a good pub called the potting shed where you have your lunch and drinks in a shed.

We are staying at the swish Black horse inn.

Foody heaven! If you’re not a northerner I would try a parmo. It’s a chicken escalope that is battered in bread crumb then béchamel sauce on top and grilled cheese.
Calorific but lush.

There is the rusty bike shed cafe literally next door too. You are a bit closer than o thought so I’ll also recommend Carlton Bank and Lord Stones Cafe which overlooks all of Teesside. Helmsley isn’t too far away either.
