Have a good ride. Take water with you, and take some sweets so you can promise yourself a treat every 5 miles, or top of the hill or whatever mini goal you set on the way.

Don't forget to let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the advice on treats and water. And as soon as I'm finished I will post my strava link to it.

But when you're looking to build up distances a bit of familiarity isn't all bad. That said me and the brains of the outfit use a few different routes now depending on what we fancy. I think it's nice to know you can do 10, 20, 30 miles or what have you and then start to explore.
This is my thought also. I don't want to get carried away exploring I want to go out know what to expect and get it done. This will also help me push harder knowing the hard sections that I need to test myself on and get better at.

+1 for having a well known route, it gives me a measure of how I'm doing and I don't have to worry about getting lost. One of these years I'll have saved up enough to rush out and buy a Garmin something or other so I can stay on track over a new route. For now, I use map my ride to plan a new route, write out a set of turn-by-turn instructions with distances and use the cateye computer to keep track. The instructions go on a little handlebar mounted clipboard that I rigged up.

Best off with paper. I thought I was up to date with technology on phones but can't seem to find anything to play a gpx file which is a map of a route you can follow. Anyhow I do need to get a phone mount for my bike so until then I'm sure I'll figure it out. Until then I think I'll go down your avenue with sticking to places I know the roads.

That's the plan tomorrow is about establishing the route and making sure I finish it. Then I'll start to pick up the pace as weeks go on. I will definitely keep drinking and keep hydrated. On my commute I forgot the water bottle think it was my 3rd day in and never again it's on my priority list every morning.

So here is the ride I do think I could do it faster new t time as spend some time figuring out where to go. Think its just under 20 miles or so but either way I enjoyed it none the less. Couple of personal notes
1 I need cycling shoes
2 eat a bit more before going out I'm starving
3 rain is a paint in the ass if it's windy
4 I do actually like rain as it keeps me cool

Well done, That is not a bad time for a first ride, and the weather was against you. As for your No.2, eat a bowl of porridge ( shouldn't have to tell a Scotsman that) with honey an hour or so before your ride, it is the cyclist's friend.

As I never got to bed late due to still unpacking in the new house I was all over the place when I got up forgot about the eating part. I'm very pleased with the time as it was a first attempted and I feel excellent t for doing it. This should make my commute better and also I'm planning to try get a mid week we mile in as well.

Well done, 2hrs is about what I take for that mileage, mind you, I'm 54. Thats my feeble excuse anyway.
I think I could do it a lot quicker next time so being optimistic about the weather next weekend and now I know where I'm going should cut some time off by not stopping to figure it out. Either way I'm just happy I achieved the distance I set out to do and can't wait to do it again and go further next month.

hydration was most definitely not the problem today 10 mins in and it started to bucket down but it never put me off I just went for it and decided it wasn't going to beat me. I will now carry some snacks for sure I was like a pig eating out a troff when I got home.
