I am trying to find there tv advert that was on last night about the bikes.

As one of the bikes has the forks backwards:ohmy: And that is on the ad....

...and the front wheel looks less than perfectly round too

A good article, but just one query....

Listed as a 'fault' is:

"The handlebar stem is the old "quill" style (instead of attaching to a steerer tube it fits directly into the headset and screws onto the forks), rather than an a-head stem."

All my 3 bikes have quill stems. I know how to adjust them, and can do so with one tool. What's wrong with them? As far as I can tell, with an A-head, you have to set it up with spacers and the like.

If A-head is stronger, and that's why it's good on MTBs, fair enough, but this bike was never going to be bought for serious off roading, so what's wrong with a quill stem?

Well.. possibly old technology, used less & less, so will become difficult to replace as time passes? A quill stem can look just the thing on a classic old bike, but I seriously doubt the quality of the quill stem on an Asda special.

True, but you'd doubt the quality of whatever stem they used

18 kgs ?

How about 21.5 kgs here
and that's more than twice the price of Asda's offering !

Good question Arch - all my bikes are quill stems too.
I did break one once, but it was on a cheapo bike I had as a student, and I was very drunk and it was a very tall kerb into which I wobbled...

My last purchase was a Falcon Explorer 15 about 10 years ago. It was about £190 and I now consider it a cheap bike. I have replaced all of the major wear coponents at least once and wish to high heaven I'd known enough to spend more on a decent machine. WIth many things in life you can get away with a cheap option if you don't use whatever it is very much or are gentle with it. Other things you just have to bite the bullet and shell out the readies, it's worth it in the long run.

hang on I just saw the tv ad for the 70 quid asda bike and it looked like the forks were the wrong way round on the gents bike. At least they're the right way round on the website
