+1 Have you seen a professional sports physio for an examination, diagnosis and advice?

I personally have knee pain and tight muscles for different reasons, one of which is a bone spur on my fibula which makes foam rolling and stretching very inadvised according to my knee specialist

This book was recommended to me, might be the same one to which @Crackle refers

In fact mine was The Anatomy of Stretching, which is below that one in the frequently bought together bit.

Self massage with a foam roller or whatever can be useful. If you can feel a knot in a muscle you can move it along from most areas. Rolling everything can help to identify knots (or trigger point) you didn't know you had, I find a massage stick more helpful because I can vary the pressure rather than use my bodyweight. I've had tremendous success with a knot in my rhomboid just inside my right shoulder blade that I knew I had but couldn't reach - I put a small massage ball in a net and hung it over my shoulder in the bath squeezing the ball between the knot and the bath. It was like scratching an itch and after several sessions the knot is gone.
