I've transported all manner of cargoes on the water but the human type has caused more angst than most.

You could have sailed as far as Cork like one lucky Priest did. He was to go to New York, but got called back at the last moment, therefore surely avoiding a watery grave.

He also took pictures on board which are now considered historical.

All in all, a very lucky man!

If cruise ships get much bigger, the blessed things won't even have to set sail - one will just board at the stern and walk to Cork, getting off at the bow.

Too true, my Grandpa's diary from his time in HMS Southampton 1917 to 1919 makes frequent reference to coaling ship as "Filthy, backbreaking work."

Can't imagine cruise ship customers walking, especially that far. There would need to be one of those moving pavements, or buses perhaps....

Looking forward to boarding the huge brittania cruise ship in september.......will be stopping in la coruna, maderia, las palma, tenerife, gran canaria and portugal. Cant do that in a poncy hotel

Without enough time to explore it properly. If you want to visit a city, visit it.Take a weekend break and explore.....cruises are *****....you spend 90% at sea in the middle of what our colonial cousins down south like to call "wall to wall bugger all"

It's true you don't get a lot of time to explore each port, but you do get a taster of many ports and can return another time to these locations that take your fancy. Most of the cruise ships I see put in the seatime at night when the passengers are asleep, sailing on to the next port.
I don't know why I'm defending cruising, never been on a cruise ship cruise* myself but I can see the attraction for people.

*Edit Not quite right. On my LEJOG I went to Birkenhead to get a ferry across the Mersey to Liverpool and discovered that the off peak trips were being sold as a Heritage Cruises, which took a bit longer than normal crossings because they had to wait until Gerry and the Pacemakers had finished singing.

A funny little story about cruise ships (I'd hate to waste even a day of my life on one, by the way):

Mrs Gti was queueing to pay the toll on one of the Mersey tunnels. The toll booth attendant was a bored teenage girl with a lot of facial jewellery. Towering behind her was a cruise ship, many decks of gleaming white with bright lights and people bustling around. Waiting for her receipt Mrs Gti remarked to the girl: "Big ship, that!"

"Wha?" replied the girl (Merseryside accent)

"It's a big ship! Behind you!"

The teenager stopped what she was doing, peered out of her little window and craned her neck to see behind. Turning back with a shocked expression she gasped:

"Oh Jesus Christ! I never realised the fookin' water was so close!"

Mrs Cube has a hankering to travel. She has mentioned cruises on a couple of occasions. Now, a couple who live near us are ardent cruise passengers, as are Mrs Cube's friend and her husband. I pointed out that if I visit a city I want to see it through the day and night, not just until teatime when we have to rush back to get onboard a ship, but what really puts me off is having to spend more than a few moments in the company of the likes of the two couples we know. I'm not sure that my reply that I'd rather spend my time slamming my genitalia in the kitchen cupboards was as diplomatic as it could have been though.

but if the hotel gets a bug you can change hotels. each to their own . I think idea of a cruise is interminably boring
