From my experience as a driver the most anoying thing that cyclists do is to act eraticaly and do unexpected, unanounced manoevers. In a word I'd say unpredictability. I'd say that this is more anoying to drivers than anything else including rljing. At least with RLJing there isn't usualy a surprise element. The cyclist will have checked the oncoming trafic so won't be surprising anyone that way.

Having said that though I think eratic behaviour is probably the most anoying and potentialy dangerous thing that any road user can indulge in regardless of their mode of transgression er, I mean transport.

Drivers want to avoid hitting cyclists (or anyone else for that matter).

They loathe RLJers and unlit ninjas etc. because those twits are making it difficult for the driver to avoid hitting them. (The closest I've come to hitting a cyclist was an unlit RLJer wearing matt black clothes).

Pedestrians hate pavement cyclists because those cyclists are putting them at risk. I happen to agree with them.

Smokin' Joe's comment about pricks is spot on.

As a motorist and van driver (not white!) my biggest complaint at this time of year is cyclists riding after dark without lights. As a cyclist I just CANNOT understand the mindset of someone who would ride without lights after dark - especially when you take into account the super effectiveness of modern cycle lights. Can someone explain why they do it?

But how do stereotypes come about?
[/quote]

Because there's some truth in them.

They are a generalisation, perhaps the average, perhaps a significant minority, but one that most of can associate with.

I guess a lot of the terms start with comedians

Stupidity.

yes admittedly stupid.
Ive just cycled up to asda with just a hand held front light.
Part cyclepath and part road.
The thing is car lights are so good i have faith that i will be seen and if im not tbh life is to short to worry about dying.
I allways thank drivers who see me and accomodate me and at the end of the day it is stupid but were a community so we look after the vulnerable , the stupid and the degenerate.

Well i guess theres a proportion of hgv drivers who are fat mentally retarded and kill hookers and unfortunately that creates a general perception that hgv drivers are fat mentally retarded and kill hookers.
It only takes a few apples to spoil the barrel. And jeremy clarkson didnt help either.
Hgv drivers always had the aura of being sexually predating degenerates but clarkson capped it with the hooker comment , very unfortunate.

It will be short with that sort of attitude! Do you honestly rely on other road users lighting you satisfactorily at night?
Wouldn't you feel happier taking responsibility for your own safety?

Yes i would feel happier taking responsibility for my own safety.
Yes i do honestly rely on other road users lighting at night.
Yes might get splattered .
I dont as a rule go out after dark cos of the lighting situation.
I need some lights.
I nip down to asda that does include some road cycling - its street lit but i know its an undesirable state of affairs and stupid.
Got a front light but need a cheap back light. On the road i put my front light on the back - on paths i use it as a front light. Not ideal.
Can you recommend a good cheap rechargeable back light that lasts a long while ?

User3143 did you see the news yesterday ; Lorry driver Robert Black convicted of fourth murder.
Recurrent tragic cases like this will reinforce the stereotype.
It seems that here the job of lorry/hgv driving is inextricably linked in with the crime itself which leads to the vilification of the job itself.
Unlike other cases where the murderers job is irrelevant - i dont even remember hearing what job the bloke that tragically murdered Joe Yates did.
