a helmet doesnt make riding risk free, any ppe is merely a control measure and a last resort at that. it does not replace other safety measures like riding properly. that said doesnt mean it isnt of value

I am afraid this is wrong, helmets are NOT formally classified as PPE

The HSE made this quite clear a few years ago...... much to the disgust of the Post Office

maybe not formally but it was the wording i chose to describe it. What ever you choose the call it, its primary function is protection.

Helmets are there to protect us, you may argue that they dont do the function they are designed for bu it doesnt take away their primary design function

they are there to protect

Helmets are there to protect us make money for the manufacturers, you may argue that they dont do the function they are designed for bu it doesnt take away their primary design function

they are there to protect because someone at Bell thought they would be a great money spinner.

Says who ?

Because "someone" says that a device is there to protect is that enough?

Who is that someone?

Are you saying we should rely on the likes of RoSPA, the College of Emergency Medicine etc to advise us that they are?

Should we simply be accepting this advice and wearing helmets?

Does that include the Sinclair A bike ?

Its more a case of them being expected to do functions they are not designed for like protect from more than a simple fall from a stationary bike.

They are designed for protection, you keep trying to muddy the waters by going off topic. helmets are designed to protect the head, sorry you cannot grasp this

stationary bike? it has been posted here they are designed up to 12/14mph. not a stationary bike?

Nobody has suggested they are anything but what they are designed for. People have suggested they are not designed to help with small bumps to the head but for profit. Many many things have a commercial edge, bikes are also built for profit such as cars, houses etc etc. Doesnt mean it alters their primary function.

Its hard to believe that this thread has become those who suggest a helmet is not a safety precaution but a profit only enterprise and those who prefer wearing helmets to not wearing them!

You can continue to try to pursuade me not to wear one but it wont work, im still wearing one regardless of what you think

Never seen anyone saying helmets should be banned or you shouldn't wear one. All the calls for compulsion and the accusations of irresponsibility come from the pro helmet camp (by no means all of them, of course).

Wear what you want, I sometimes wear a cotton cap although it serves no purpose except to sit on my head.

The same applies to many things, my concern is that you seem to have an almost evangelical faith in helmets and yet you seem very vague about the evidence you base these statements on. You are also very keen to avoid enlightening us as to where you get this insight from...... asking whether you have gained your undying faith in helmets from RoSPA the College of Emergency Medicine for example (or any other organization /body) is hardly "off topic" or "muddying the waters".

If you are uncomfortable being asked what you have based this evangelical faith on, or afraid to admit that you cannot substantiate your claim then please just say so.

You want me to run research before wearing a helmet, i dont want to as i am happy with my decision based on my own experience. You seem to spend alot of time trying to prove to me i shouldnt wear one.

I am comfortable with my choice. You seem really confused about yours, you have read up alot and spent time trying to justify not wearing one. If i were you i wouldnt worry so much, dont be scared of being criticized for a decision you make, have the confidence to make your own decision without always having to rely on reports and investigations. You could end up never making a deicision or relying on your instinct if your not careful, if this spread into your professional life you would struggle to complete anything.

Take care mate, and as i say dont worry
