My cassette is a 12-28 and I'm thinking of going 12-30 or even 32

My derailleur is a shimano 105 but I don't know what size cassette I can use

I live in quite a hilly area and the sportives I do are very hilly, done one yesterday that was 10,700ft (failed at 75 miles)

I struggle to keep a good cadence on the long up hill slogs and tend to slowly grind away which finishes my legs early on

Anyone know what size cassette I can fit with my derailleur?

I changed my for a 105 cassette (12-30) with a 10 speed Ultegra chain - works a treat on my Defy 1

I'm no expert but I think with a short cage, you may be on the limit at about 30.
Saying that, I have read before that some people have made it work with a short cage but I think the mech hanger needs to be a bit more on the long side or something ........
I'm sure someone with more knowledge than me will give you a more accurate answer tho

Depends on version the 5700 both SS and GS will do 30th but the SS only has a capacity of 34th compared with the 39 of the GS both can be used on a compact double if the rear cassette is close grouped say 11-28 max for anything more a GS version is needed.

On a SS derailer? 39 ring only will work too then?
In theory it should work on a SS 13th (difference) front using a 11-32, 21th (difference) rear total 34th the total difference, an SS 105 can cope with in theory.
Without getting too complicated you can fit a 11/32 if you only use the 34 front ring and not the 50..
Till you forget

Shimano tech is BS, its a guide only.

The hanger length is critical.

32 will work on some (only just) but you really are pushing things, but most bikes will take a 30 (50/34) without issue.

Both my bikes run 30T.
