I live in Powys. Likes. Its very rural, im on my own. Only one neighbour. Lots of open spaces. Locals don't drive like maniacs. We leave that to the tourists. Its very very quiet and I like that. Neighbours are always willing to help If you need it. Very low crime. Headline news is if someones shed is broken into.

dislikes. Decent towns are far and few between. Not many shops. No job opportunities. Not many facilities due to closures. not many busses, hence you have to have a car. No cycling clubs. No clubs of any kind really. People can feel isolated if they don't or can't drive. There is nothing for kids to do and they have to travel long distances to see friends. Parents and grand parents have to do a lot of driving.

Some people like the life and some don't. I personally love it and would never live in a city again.

@welsh dragon .... sounds great want a lodger

Live in a tiny place on the coast of West Somerset.

Likes:

Stunning countryside.
The beaches.
Exmoor literally on the doorstep.
Quantocks five miles away.
Great house overlooking the beach one way and Exmoor the other.
Really friendly people.
Great cycling country.
Great dog walking country.
North Devon beaches 45 minutes away.
Great to come back to after visting family in Birmingham and Reading.
Relatively warm (compared to the Midlands where I lived for first 40 years of my life).

Dislikes:

Can be VERY WINDY right on the coast.
Tourists in the summer not realising I can ride quicker than them in their motorhomes/car towing caravans.
If you want a flat/easy ride, tough.
You don't get much choice in the shopping/culture departments....

Come to think of it, Dislikes, Nil!

I'm in the North East. county Durham

Likes:

Cost of living is cheap, rent not to bad

Wide open spaces, some people complain about the traffic, but there's hardly any in comparison to further south.

Beautiful countryside in easy reach - 4 miles from door I expect most of us can say that.

Good cycling to be had once you know where - I expect most us can say that.

Dislikes:

Much of the built up area is run down -but its getting improved.
only one bike shop

Likes:

Easy to tool around town on a bike - the kids can ride to school and to their friends and I can get to work in 15mins - rarely have to use the car.
Decent selection of places to eat and drink
Student town - so reasonably lively
Can jump on the train and get to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Berlin or London all within a few hours

Dislikes:

Popular with tourists, so gets a bit busy in summer
Extensive bike infrastructure is not very conducive to sport cycling and it's largely flat and urban and the wind is often horrible
Expensive living standards - not SE England high, but not too far off.

The good.
On the edge of the countryside so really great for cycling.
And only 15 miles to central London.
Fantastic for travel, trains and buses etc so easy to get into and back from London and elsewhere, the south coast etc
Good schools
A really good mix of top notch restaurants
A few decent pubs
Lot's of parks
Really good neighbours who look out for each other
A couple of really good bike shops (Cycles UK especially)

The bad
It's boring
It's not London
It's surburban hell
Nothing ever happens here
Boris Johnson's brother is our local MP.
Too white middle class
House prices are way too high as it's SE England commuter belt
Orpington High Street is very poor. (Apart from some of the restaurants) too many charity shops, estate agents and crappy pubs
Though the local council are doing their best to make things better with a new cinema, health centre and shopping mall.
It's skirted by big main roads
They've stopped baking bread at the Kingsmill factory so no nice smells to mask the stench of the Crays.

Small town North Ayrshire.

Plus points:
It's near the sea.
It's near the hills.
It's only an hour from Glasgow.
It's 400 miles from London.
Quite good local amenities.
Mostly friendly people.
Some good pubs.
Low crime rate.
Nice scenery when the rain goes off for long enough to see it.

Minus points:
It's near the hills (from cycling POV).
It's too far from France.
Some good pubs (since I'm no longer supposed to partake of the poison).
It's a bit cliquey.
Very little in the way of employment opportunities.
It's cold, it's wet (very wet), it's windy - for much of the year including summer!
The last point totally ruins the place for me; but the same applies for large swathes of northern and western UK..

This part of Meanwood is ok.Our street is quiet,it has a woodland view from the front windows.Handy for a load of different Supermarkets.Bus service can be iffy, but seeing as i don't pay,i can't complain.Bad points, well apart from the occasional burning flying Chinese lantern i can find nothing to complain about.

Cambridgeshire- Likes.... Not many! It needs a mountain range. Just a small one to start with.
It's close enough to London to use London from time to time for the good bits.

Cambridge- Cracking city despite the hordes of tourists. Cultured, attractive, vibrant buoyant. The negatives are the house prices
