I never ask for- still less expect - answers to this sort of thing, I merely wonder about it.

It was actually intended to be rhetorical - ie asked to make a statement rather than expect an answer - which is very, very different to specious, which usually refers to a superficially plausible - but actually incorrect - argument.
But it is good word, just not in this context.

I was merely responding to this forum user's statement (which was confusingly first posted as a subject of wonderment.) It's still OK to respond to statements made on here, yeah? Or does posting them as rhetorical questions somehow make them sacrosanct?
