I also get really annoyed by the term "pan fried" as seen on restaurant menus. I always feel like asking the chef, "Well what do suppose we think you fried it in? Your girlfriend's knickers from yesterday?" Idiots!
And the other culinary one is Sea Bass. The British name for the fish is Bass. Because the Americans call anything which looks like a perch and lives in freshwater a bass, they call the thing that looks like a perch and lives in the sea, sea-bass. Fair enough. But because we call freshwater fish which look like perch, perch we call the ones in the sea bass. But some TV chef dimwit who probably doesn't know a stickleback from a great white shark imported the term and we now appear to be stuck with it.
