The starlings are ruining everything so I need to act. Any idea's ? I wish them no harm but the other
smaller birds are missing out so I'm considering a toy bb gun to deter them, can't think of what else to do.

No manners those starlings , you’d think they were wild!

They really are the yobs of the bird world we had a young flock around here whilst I was working in the outside office a few months back, they were causing havoc with the rest of the birds

I reckon they can get a but of a hard time as they have to eat as well.

I do remember on one particular North Sea oil platform when a few landed seeking shelter and the guys fed them but the flock got bigger and bigger until eventually they had to bring out specialists to gas them all. It was a real shame, and probably why I like to make sure everyone gets something.

Apparently you can give them a little bread (pref wholemeal ) now and again but you should not let birds become dependant on it as it can harm or eventually kill them, nobody wants that, but be aware when they are
breeding in springtime don't feed them bread as the chicks may die from malnutrision if mother feeds it on to them.

edit. the chicks tummy swells up with the bread filler mum has fed to him hen the chick is satisfied it no longer
feels hungry. Soon becomes weak through eating junk food then evtu dieing. Naughty mummy!

Yes I know wha tyou mean, I'm happy to tolerate them for a while as they're going crazy over the fatballs
but before you know it there's like 20 - 30 of them. Seen a big flock of them in the late afternoon sky.
It was great to watch them there was easily a hundred then they all went to roost in the trees about 300 mtrs
from my back garden, oh hum!

Just out of curiosity I googled the rspb take on feeding bread..

All types of bread can be digested by birds, but ideally it should only be just one component in a varied diet. Bread does not contain the necessary protein and fat birds need from their diet, and so it can act as an empty filler. Although bread isn't harmful to birds, try not to offer it in large quantities, since its nutritional value is relatively low. A bird that is on a diet of predominantly, or only bread, can suffer from serious vitamin deficiencies, or starve

When its not an American article ! Often see this stuff where it has little or no relevance to the ret of the world and is made into such a drama.

I chose this article as it was blunt and to the point. Some people need to be told bluntly.

I can't comment on the 'often see this stuff' because i don't know what you're on about.

Thats the actual context. No different to any other living organisms but the semi literate take it to the extremes.

Birds like all animals are not silly, they will go to great lengths to get the nutrients and minerals that they are lacking. We all know what salt licks are. Birds do have a brain.

Get one of the caged feeders that the small birds can get through and the starlings can't. You can get them as hanging feeders or if you're ground feeding there are cages that stand on the ground.

Seeing this last week I think it should be compulsory viewing whenever anyone starts to dislike starlings. It's stunning.

I'm saving the gun idea for the flipping pigeons which were cooing half the night.

Well if you compare what you posted to what Midlife posted you will see his covers the points clearly without fuss and is relevant and applicable to European birds. The stuff I was not clear about is the posts of this tree/plant/flower will kill your horse/ dog/ child and people then cut them down rather than look it up and find its an American article and the tree doesn't grow here.
