The difference nowadays is that the particles from diesel exhausts are smaller so they penetrate your lungs more readily. You'll notice that the exhausts on diesel cars are generally hidden under the rear bodywork, which ensures that the fumes get mixed up and diluted and you don't see a stream of fumes coming straight out of the pipe. This and plasticiser migration (the grey film that forms on the insides of the windows) are the last Big Problems the car industry hasn't solved yet.
