And whilst the little buggers carefully tamp down the soil when burying their hoard of nuts, they are less diligent when digging them up!
Yes, although we live on the edge of an urban area, we have recently "acquired" a squirrel. My wife likes to watch it's antics, and, I put a feeder on a tree in our garden. The little blighter goes through enormous quantities of hazel nuts, but, I have noticed it appears to bury most of them (in our garden, and the gardens of neighbours). It does occur to me that, if squirrel does not subsequently dig them up, we are going to be trapped in a dense jungle of hazel nut trees in the future
