So, long term listener but first time caller here looking for some opinions.

Firstly, is this thread just for retirees or is it OK for us workies to ask a bit of advice?
You come seeking enlightenment...

Of course you are welcome.

OK, I've got a lot to ask but I'll try and make this short.

I've always worked, I think I've had 3 days sick leave in best part of 40 years. I've always thought I would work until I dropped, as that's what guys like me do. I don't know what has changed my mind so much so quickly but my brother has recently retired and my job is crap, although its easy beyond belief and reasonably well paid.

I Understand about taking independent financial advice and all that, but I suppose what I'd like to know is how do you get to taking the leap to giving up work, and is it as massive a change as I imagine it to be?

That's just for starters.

Personal view
I know it is boring but sort out the money
if you stop wrking how much will you have per month and how much do you need
and how much do you want

hint - you will want more than you think but not all the things you think

Track down any pensions and saving that you might have and add them all up

I know money isn;t everything - but if you don;t have any then it can do a damn good job of buggering up everything else!!!

Well - I have been feeling carp for the last few days - sort of sick and back aching - which is unusual for me

no known cause - just aching back - clearly muscular

and also very tired all the time

anyway - was better yesterday - at times

today was also a bit better so I decided to go for a ride

and - a new experience

for the first time ever - as far as I can remember - I was actually properly terrified!!!!
I was riding over the old Widnes-Runcorn bridge - it now had a really good wide cycle path - wide enough for 2 cars to pass easily if they were allowed on it

Anyway - I was riidng along as normal - slightly uphill as it is a bridge - and a scrambler bike shot past me at high speed and VERY high revs
EXTREMLY noisy
followed by another even noisier one
second was was clealry trying to scare me as he must have missed me by only a foot at most
I was just trying to ride straight and as far left as possible as I have no idea how many of these idiots there were and if one of the misjudged it or I wobbled to the right a bit I would have made Gordan Ramsey's little prang look like a walk in the park

A third one shot past marginally further away but just as noisy - just higher pitched

Yea Gods I was shaken!!!!

They had loads of room to pass me further away - so clearly trying to scare me
and successded

ANyway - just off to report it to the fuzz
probably no use but if everyone did then maybe they could catch them and give them a damn good telling off

I wouldn't ask anyone's personal circumstances but I don't think the money thing is my main concern. I have worked non stop for years, and whilst the only pension I have is my current work pension, I have always done my own thing and reckon I'm OK in that regard, although I haven't sat and worked it all out. I have seen guesstimate's that say minimum around 14k per annum, a few luxuries around 31k and easy street around 43k a year, does that ring true?

I think my main question is really how do you make the transition to worker to not working?

I suppose it may depend where you live, and, what you want to do, but, from personal experience I would say your 14k figure is a bit low, but, the other two are reasonable.

One thing that I found was that I spent significantly less when I left work. This wasn’t forced, it just happened. I still can’t explain how/why, I wasn’t THAT generous with office collections 😊, but, as I say, I found myself with more disposable income than I expected.

I’d say those numbers sound about right.
Re the transition to not working, it varies hugely from person to person. For me it was huge, like stepping off a cliff edge, and 5 years on I still haven’t got it fully sussed. For others I’ve spoken to it was completely seamless and they have been puzzled as to why I’ve even asked the question. Quite a few however have remarked that it has taken them about a year to adjust, that seems to be a common view.

That is my concern.

I was fortunate enough to spend some time with my dad and his pals after he retired and I watched others come and go. Some seemed to take it in their stride, while others really struggled with it. I fear I may be the latter, but work is driving me round the twist.

I wish I could offer some pearls of wisdom, some hints and tips. But sadly not, I’m still clueless myself.

Strange but I often think back to identical twin girls I went out with. I was 17.
Without getting too graphic they were both erhh very well endowed.
But I never really knew which one I was with.
Then our house was knocked down for the new Mersey tunnel. We moved away and I never saw them again.

B etter knocked down than "knocked up" ! Imagine knocking up a pair of twins , that WOULD be going for the double. I knew a pair of identical twin girls , much younger than me and in school with my sister. A few years ago my sister recounted to me that many years ago sister A had "a close encounter" with a guy who's performance in the horizontal position impressed her greatly. She had a date with him for another night but could not m turn up because of her menstrual cycle etc . instead of cancelling, she sent her twin sister B to meet him , the guy didn't know it wasn't the original twin . Twin B was also greatly impressed with the guy's prowess . My sister would not reveal the mysterious guys identity !!! 😍 😍
