So, long term listener but first time caller here looking for some opinions.
Firstly, is this thread just for retirees or is it OK for us workies to ask a bit of advice?
Of course you are welcome.
OK, I've got a lot to ask but I'll try and make this short.
I've always worked, I think I've had 3 days sick leave in best part of 40 years. I've always thought I would work until I dropped, as that's what guys like me do. I don't know what has changed my mind so much so quickly but my brother has recently retired and my job is crap, although its easy beyond belief and reasonably well paid.
I Understand about taking independent financial advice and all that, but I suppose what I'd like to know is how do you get to taking the leap to giving up work, and is it as massive a change as I imagine it to be?
That's just for starters.
Personal view
I know it is boring but sort out the money
if you stop wrking how much will you have per month and how much do you need
and how much do you want
hint - you will want more than you think but not all the things you think
Track down any pensions and saving that you might have and add them all up
I know money isn;t everything - but if you don;t have any then it can do a damn good job of buggering up everything else!!!
I wouldn't ask anyone's personal circumstances but I don't think the money thing is my main concern. I have worked non stop for years, and whilst the only pension I have is my current work pension, I have always done my own thing and reckon I'm OK in that regard, although I haven't sat and worked it all out. I have seen guesstimate's that say minimum around 14k per annum, a few luxuries around 31k and easy street around 43k a year, does that ring true?
I think my main question is really how do you make the transition to worker to not working?
I’d say those numbers sound about right.I wouldn't ask anyone's personal circumstances but I don't think the money thing is my main concern. Re the transition to not working, it varies hugely from person to person. For me it was huge, like stepping off a cliff edge, and 5 years on I still haven’t got it fully sussed. For others I’ve spoken to it was completely seamless and they have been puzzled as to why I’ve even asked the question. Quite a few however have remarked that it has taken them about a year to adjust, that seems to be a common view.
That is my concern.
I was fortunate enough to spend some time with my dad and his pals after he retired and I watched others come and go. Some seemed to take it in their stride, while others really struggled with it. I fear I may be the latter, but work is driving me round the twist.
Strange but I often think back to identical twin girls I went out with. I was 17.
Without getting too graphic they were both erhh very well endowed.
But I never really knew which one I was with.
Then our house was knocked down for the new Mersey tunnel. We moved away and I never saw them again.
