Alice in Wonderland immediatly springs to mind, you'd have to be off your t*ts to think those characters up!

Yep and until relatively recently it was completely legal, you could walk into a Chemists and buy a bottle of Laudanum (Opium dissolved in 100% Alcohol), ditto Cannabis which Queen Victoria used to take for period cramps, Amphetamine in 'slimming pills' and Cocaine in toothache remedies.

Then the Americans decided to ban the lot including Alcohol in 'prohibition' leading to criminal gangs making millions in illicit supply.

By the time he denied it he had 'cleaned up' and achieved more success and fame so (as it says in that article) carried on with the tradition of being very vague about what his songs were about and being deliberately obtuse to journalists. Now I've never taken Heroin but following the operations to my shattered Femur I was on Morphine (the medical version) for 4-5 days both times and the lines between dream and reality are certainly 'blurred', I can see why such great literature and music were written by people on Opiates.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was written while he was under the influence.

But there really isn't much in the lyrics to suggest it is ABOUT Heroin, and he has certainly denied it was.

Definitely signs of creeping old age… friction shifters on my Trek Domane…

A considerable plot device in Wilkie Collins' The Moonstone (one of my favourite novels), is what may or may not have been carried out while one of the characters was under the influence of laudanum.

There I was this aft' trying to cross a busy road, with a mini roundabout and a blind bend/corner. Every time I put a foot on the road another vehicle came along forcing me to step back on the pavement. I had a walking stick in my left hand and a dog on a lead and a shopping bag in my right hand. Instead of someone offering to help me across this busy road I had to ask someone for help. A asked a young woman walking by. She took my bag and linked her arm with mine, then put her hand up to alert approaching vehicles so I could cross with her. Yes, I felt like I was 80, but it was better than being mowed down! If only the buggers would indicate as they approached that mini roundabout, I might've made it across without help!!

If only the drivers would obey the rules of the road and stop for you.

You get a piece of glass in your foot, but you can't bend it enough to see properly, and you can't see it as it's at that range where it's too far to see with glasses off, and too near with glasses on. You opt to leave it there and hope it works it's way out. It's taken a week to come out !

Ticks like to attach themselves to soft tissue and guess where that is likely to be. You need good light, two mirrors, specs and 3 hands to operate the removal tool which you cannot see too well as the distance is wrong for the specs while the mirrors wave around as it is difficult to get everything in focus.
Wives can be very handy if you happen to have one or even a reasonable substitute you do not mind exposing your “ bits” to.
