NewLands Lane
Normanton
Wakefield

Whilst walking Doris the Dog, along a regular route, l glanced at one of the signs
For some reason, this time it ‘clicked’

Presumably the ’L & Y’ is a nod to this being part of the ‘Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway’

The bridge is located between Normanton Station & KirkGate Station (Wakefield)

It’s just to the right of the bridge, at the photographers side of it

Looking at some old maps that rather impressive tower was once part of a brickworks on the site, there was once quite the network of track there supporting various works. All long gone now. And yes it does stand for Lancashire and Yorkshire, its the Calder Valley line.

I've done a fair amount of riding in that area, there loads of unadopted paths and trails in the area to explore. My most recent one was bit further North East were I persuaded a friendly security guard to let me down an otherwise closed lane past where the new Leeds incinerator is being built.

Yes, that was the (St Johns Colliery) brickworks, there's another chimney (Normanton Brickworks) still standing, less than half a mile away too!
An old photograph, it's quite overgrown around it now; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/366363

If you look at your (linked) maps, the line heading south-east from Goosehill Juntion, allowed trains to run towards South Yorkshire

The line went off through the vegetation to the right; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3520307

Two ex-Great Western lovelies from my ride yesterday.

1) Wilmcote station just north of Stratford on Avon, retaining its classic GWR rural station look

2) some lower quadrant signalling weirdness at Droitwich. Can someone tell me what sort of signals these are?
nb. if you squint under the bridge you can just about make out another set of lower-quadrant signals.
