There are documents in NRM archives that do not support this, a group called Save Our Scotsman (SOS)could not raise the money, so Alan Pegler stepped in and bought it outright. SOS were never interested in any other train.

I said it was a story, but well done for actually having looked at the NRM Archives, that is giving efort above and beyond the call of duty! 😆

Me, I liked it in black, but I tend to concentrate on other locos instead - Moneypit, sorry, Scotsman, is one that I can take or leave... Mostly leave.

Something I only learned recently about FS is that, under Tony Marchington's ownership, its power was boosted to more than it ever had under LNER or BR ownership. This may have contributed to its dire state of repair by the time the NRM bought it.

It was fitted with an A4 boiler (may still carry it) so strictly in LNER classification making it an A3/1.

I think they also bored out the cylinders a bit (an A4 had smaller cylinders than an A3, so it was an odd decision). Pushed tractive effort over the "magic" GWR King figure* of 40,000lbf along with the higher pressure.

*which I think only applied to 6000, as the rest had lined-up cylinders.

I read this today. A bit of early railway history near you (I think).

Wooden tracks being used in Freiburg I'm Breisgau.

I've already put this in the photos thread, but my local village station has just had new lights and electrics/control box fitted as it is the main switching point for the two different lines for rail freight heading to Felixstowe port's three rail terminals. With the increasing rail freight meaning the gates are closed more often, they've also refurbished the footbridge and gived the station new, old style name plates.

Unfortunately the old station building looks like it will have to be pulled down - https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/23518279.community-group-still-hopeful-saving-trimley-station/

One of the first things new starts at the museum do is a tour of the archives, some of the most wonderful things are hidden away in there, George Stephenson’s drawings, Fanny Kemble’s letter, Dr. Beeching’s notes, all sorts. Later, when we have a bit of spare time we spend it studying what we are working on.
