Good luck with everything. And don't be believing all this guff that other women come out with to get sympathy off us men about it hurting and all that. I'm not saying it doesn't smart a bit but you are designed to do it so just get on with it!

Lifting the cat box and carrying it to the car was the trickiest bit, PaulB.:biggrin::biggrin:

It sounds like they are getting on very well .
I've had experiences of taking in a new cat and the hissing and spitting can last for weeks or longer before they all cuddle up and have a snooze together. Two of mine still don't get on at all after 3 years and never will. It sounds like your two will tolerate each other at least

I'm sure she will come to trust you quite soon, don't rush her, just take things at her pace and you'll get along fine. One thing which might help is if you can look her in the eyes and then blink a couple of times. This is cat body language for "I'm happy and relaxed in your presence". Apparently.

Should we still keep suggesting names?

Got Rory and Isobel home earlier... Phots attached, not brilliant as didn't want to use the flash. Already had a demolition derby with Isobel knocking my CD tower over...

I've renamed them as the previous owners had called them Spot and C-For (!), neither of which I was particularly convinced by.

Yes, Longers, please keep suggesting names.

As Domd1979 says, I do not want to use flash, as it might upset her. She has been hiding quietly in the lounge this evening. She has been eating well, found the litter tray, and seems very alert.

I had expected Leo to object to a new arrival. He spends a lot of time out doors, especially when it is mild weather like it is now. When I have approached her in her hiding places, I have kept a distance of about a yard, so she does not feel trapped. I will try the blinking bit.

 She seems to have great difficulty walking any distance. It is either a v e r y s l o w meander or a fast run, nothing in between.

Domd, I was going to call her Spot, but she is far too elegant for a name like that. (Spot was Data's cat in Star Trek, not sure if I have mentionned that.)

I am trying to keep a close eye on both cats when they are near each other. The first time they met, Leo, the encumbent cat approached Tasha and they touched noses.

On another occasion Tasha came up behind Leo, when he was lying down with his back to her. I think she surprised him so he stood up, gave a bit of a hiss. They then both sat down, about two yards apart, facing me, and trying to look like they were ignoring each other.

This morning they had another encounter, this ended with Leo crouching down and turning round, still crouched and he left the room. I am surprised that Leo adopted what looks like a submissive posture. Also what does it mean when a cat yawns, I think someone told me once, that it is not that they are tired. Can anyone suggest sensible reasons for the above behaviour.

Yawning and looking away is a way of avoiding confrontation and showing you are no threat. Yawning and not looking away is a sign that you have been awake for almost 10 minutes and given that there is no prospect of food appearing you might as well go back to sleep.

Yawning is a non-threatening behaviour.

Personally, I'd leave them to sort out their heirarchy and there's bound to be the occasional spat. Unless there's serious blood drawn in any spat, I'd let them get on with it, making sure that each cat has plenty of choice in spaces he/she can retreat to to have a bit of peace from the other and at least two litter trays available for use at all times (three would be even better). They may end up best of friends, they may end up just tolerating each other, they may end up avoiding each other - but as long as there's no serious blood drawn and they each have 'space' then that's perfectly fine.

How are your new arrivals doing?

Isobel looks exceedingly mischievous.

Very well, ta! Isobel is exceedingly mischievous....!! Rory's a lot more laid back, though he is obsessed with trying to get behind the fridge for some reason. They seem to like having mad half hours at two in the morning galloping round the house and jumping on each other, which interrupts my kip!

When we got Tiggy, we kept her in the conservatory overnight for a couple of weeks until the two older (i.e. 10) related cats got used to her....

They were a bit .."whoah...what's this in my house, lots of hissing when she jumped on them etc......) Still a bit like that 18 months on..... the older two want an easy life, but Tiggy will chase them....

This is Tiggy a few months back.....

And this is now - Tiggy top, Belle lower tier (the cat with no teeth) and her having a sneeky swipe at her sister Jazz lower (current photo)...... Spot the odd one out !!!

I have failed so far to take photo of Tasha that is in focus. So for now, here is what the encumbent cat thinks of the situation - he is packing his suitcase.

(bear with me as I make my first attempt at posting a full-size pic, instead of a tiny one)

Whooo hoooo it worked.:biggrin::wahhey:

Many thanks to the person who gave me the simple instructions to follow, I will try and remember who it was.

I have now done a search and found it was Rhythm Thief, to whom many thanks, and a virtual pint in Beer?
