Check french law first, they may be a bit more pedantic than the UK or PSNI. Shouldn't really be a problem if you've got decent lights Sunset - Sunrise

its higher than the old one - and yes i do have short legs LOL i'm only 5ft 1
That's fair enough.

Just mentioning because having the saddle set low is something that a lot of people do when they start. When the saddle is set to the right height the legs should be just bent at the bottom of the stroke, which is higher than folks usually expect.

So am I. The idea that you should be able to put your feet down while sitting on the saddle is wrong, and you will damage your knees riding like that. At 5ft 1 my saddle isn't ridiculously high like some tall men's, but it is at least level with the handlebars on all my bikes. Give it a try, you will find it's more comfortable honest.
will give it a go - but its scary !!!!!!

You can get off the saddle to put your feet on the floor, just do some practicing and I'm sure you'll be fine

^This.
You only need them on in France if you are cycling at night (under French law), but to be honest I don't think the gendarmes would care unless you were riding at night without lights.[/quote

Had to google this to be sure, 1m 60 makes me 5ft 2?
One of my bikes only has the saddle level with the bars, that one is a man's frame.
The other ones (hybrids similar to @s7ephanie 's - nice bike!) have the saddle more level to the stem, much lover than the handlebars.
They are set as high as I can get without loosing grip on the pedals.
Sometimes I ride a 24" wheeled frame, there the saddle is just a bit higher than the bars.
Guess it's different with road bikes?
