Winter Wonderland

The accolade for worst Winter Wonderland catastrophe is still held by the short-lived Lapland New Forest experience at Matchams Leisure Park near Ringwood in 2008. Advertisements promised a place "where dreams really do come true", with an ice rink and a nativity scene, but the ice rink was "broken" and the nativity scene was painted on a billboard in a muddy field. One Santa and several elves were attacked by angry parents, two dads brawled in the Gingerbread House and one snowman received so much verbal abuse he stormed off in full costume. Trading standards received more than 2,000 complaints and the RSPCA launched an investigation into the treatment of husky dogs, reindeers and donkeys on the site. The attraction closed down after six days and families who turned up with pre-paid tickets were told by one helper: "Santa's f***ing dead."

Again, not convinced that this was a C**k Up.

I'd say its always been a cock up, they've always charged by the bus fare not the car so bring 4 people to go shopping and thats £16. You might as well drive closer into town and park there. (though lately the council has done a good job of gridlocking the entire centre so even that might not be viable now!).

Is it 4 quid now?! The period I'm talking about is 2016-2018 ish, it was £3 and up to 3 kids were free with 1 adult ticket. So it used to cost us £6. Before I started cycling to work I used to get a swipe card with 10 trips and you got a bulk discount so it cost £2.70 a day.

Some people where I used to work were using it for park and cycle (i.e park for free and bring a folding bike in the boot). On one hand you could see it as freeloading but I was ok with it as it's still reducing car use in the centre and getting more folks on bikes.

Yeah I looked up the prices to be sure. No child prices, but they still offer upto 3 kids (under 19) with every fare paying adult. The whole fare system is a mess, every other P&R I've used is pay for parking, free bus.

The bit I highlighted in Bold is not freeloading, in fact I asked the Metro people ages back if this was allowed and it absolutely is, and they said they want to encourage people to do this.

I've never seen it that way round, every one I've been in is free parking and pay for the bus. Must admit, a single charge for the parking then a free bus for however many would make more sense, but would probably cost them more.

Might be just my experience then. I can see why a group of adults would drive in though, parking for the day in the centre can be had for less that £10.

The Great British Advanced Passenger Train, which was able to lean going round corners. In itself a cock-up, but at least the idea was put in place and now used on the Pendolinos on the west coast main line.

I recall from a documentary about that it had all the ingredients of a good cock up. Over budget, late, technical problems, muddled strategic thinking, PR disasters, political interference.

Shame because they threw out the baby with the bathwater when they binned it just as it was getting close to being a finished product.
