Going out on a limb here but I advocate, given this is the metric century challenge, participants' rides are denominated in kilometres (and if included, climb in metres)?
NB I have restrained myself for months on this.
I appreciate many prefer 'freedom' units.
It's a fair comment and indeed when I have previously entered this challenge, despite a personal preference for imperial units, this is the only thread where I will also put a metric conversion alongside my distance; for example, my final entry from last year's challenge:

24th December: 66.89 miles / 107.6km - Aylesbury, Waddesdon Greenway, Botolph Claydon, Marsh Gibbon, Bicester, Bletchingdon, Hampton Poyle, Murcott, Kingswood, Quainton, Aylesbury - https://www.strava.com/activities/8286741267

Conversely I put aside my metric preferences and always post and discuss my 100 mile rides on the Imperial Century a Month thread in miles. And on the lunacy thread I post raving nonsense.

Set off this morning to do a 200k Audax. I missed the first control, just ddn't see it - and wasn't sure what I was looking for. By the time I realised what had happened I was 10k down the road.

By then it was really unpleasantly hot so I bought myself a load of chilled water from WH Smiths, had a coffee and a think. I decided to bin the audax and just rode another 35k on an improvised route and got the train home. It was much nicer without the audax worries about pacing and getting controls right. Turned out to be a good decision because 5k before the station my feet suddenly became incredibly painful so I could have run into trouble if I'd stuck with the audax. I think they must have swollen in the heat. Stopped hurting immediately I got off the bike.

I prefer metric units but would use miles to describe an imperial century. What I find really weird is people who mix their units...

  • A 73.6 mile ride with 2,017 m of ascent
  • 102 km with 3,924 ft of climbing

i find it weird that our road signs are in miles and yet people are obsessed with metric units ;)

Yeah. I don't understand why they don't they change them ;)

(Seriously, when was the last time you needed to look at a road sign rather than using a GPS)

I find it weird that the clearly more sensible metric system was introduced back in the French Revolution in the late 1700s but we still haven't completely changed over to it... Change those road signs - all the OS maps are in metric units now, you know! :okay:

Not that I ever take any notice of road signs. I use my GPS to tell me where I am (set up to use kms), and my routes are plotted on those metric OS maps.

I was taught exclusively in the metric system from the age of 11 (56 years ago!) so I actually have to mentally convert back to imperial to discuss things with you diehards. These days on the forum I post in metric with a conversion in brackets for those of you who are unwilling (or unable!) to be sensible...

Thing is, you don't drive. Once you start driving then speed limits and all that malarkey are in miles and you soon get educated/indoctrinated.

Interestingly the grid system, which is metric and based on km squares, dates back to the 1930s and (ISTR) has its roots in military grids that are even older.

GB [not NI/Ireland's - ITM used there] current grid is based on OSGB36 and [slowly and after the war] replaced the Cassini Grid [itself introduced in 1927]: the previous standard projection for GB OS maps.
