well i made it

52.58 miles in 3 hours 7 minutes 46 seconds. Cyclogs tells me thats 16.8mph average speed (computer says 16.7)

not a very hilly ride but lots of short, steep up and down bits.

i had two stops to eat (but mainly to give my bum a rest), one at 18 miles and one at 35 and this put the overall time up to 3 hours 18 minutes but riding time is as above

the worst thing i had to put up with was a sore nipple in the last ten miles , a new experience that one !!!

For interest...

The power requirement to achieve a 16.75 mph average is just about nearly spot on DOUBLE that required to average 20 kmh.

On my model of me on my SWorks, it's an average power of 125 Watts at 16.75 mph.

The next milestone is to average 20 mph at an average power output of 260 Watts. Note - that's double again

OK for this weight and Cd, 12.5 mph is 60 Watts and 16.75 is about 120 Watts.
240 Watts will get you about 19.5 mph.

Do you ride in Cat 3?

while i think i understand what your saying (double effort does not mean double speed etc.) i have to say that without any heart/power monitors i consider myself reasonably good at being able to judge when I'm working at my limit.

on that 52 mile ride i couldn't have given it much more.

thank you for your comments, it certainly gives me more of an idea how much work i have to put in to make that kind of improvement (20mph Av)

cat 3 ??? OK, you've lost me now !!!

Congrats on going the distance.

IMHO the effort (y) / distance (x) graph is an N shape. The first time you tackle 50 miles requires an immense effort, and is probably as hard as anything you'll ever tackle.

Subsequent rides of 60, 70, 80, etc all seem to get easier, provided you keep the base mileage in place. 50 miles is more than enough to experience a range of terrains and situations, so as long as you're fuelled and watered, only sleep and scheduling obligations can stop you now.

The next time you'll hit something as tough as that first 50 is somewhere between here and 200 miles. It varies per person.

You done good.

Recommend you hunt out the threads of MacBludgeon for inspiration. He's gone great guns of late.

Here's the page from the BCF website.

I have chosen 'Road racing', 'Go race' and '4th Category' in the dropdown menus.

Where you see 'Go race' against an event, you can turn up and enter the 4th Catagory race even if you are not a member of a club.

Your 50 mile time looked good enough to be well up the field in a 'Go race' event. Have a go

My 'home' event is the 6th Sept in Warwick. Its a twisty, narrow circuit with some dangerous corners.

Congratulations. Vaseline or sticking plasters tend to be the best solution to the nipple problem BTW.

well i waited until i felt i was "ready" for the ride but others may want to push themselves by taking part in a charity ride.
i worked up to it by doing 30 miles, then 40.
also I'm not a fan of "there and back" rides so i like to do loops or circular routes.

i kept my route on the roads i was familiar with, so there were no nasty surprises, and i broke it down into 3 stages, separated by a five minute rest stop to stretch and eat. i knew i wanted the last stage to be 15 miles so i had ONLY 15 mile left, and i divided the first 35miles roughly into two equal sections, so now i'm not riding 50 miles, i'm doing 17.5, 17.5 and 15. small difference you may think but easier to swallow phycologicly :becool:

rather than worry about speed or time i just went by feel, and tried to avoid counting the miles off. my hardest part was between 30 and 35 miles where i was a bit saddle sore and started counting down to my rest stop. it just made the miles drag even more

also take time to celebrate all the little positives along the route. every down hill is another bit of road out of the way for very little effort, so give yourself a little smile, it all helps.

once you get to 45 miles it's all down hill from there, after all, who's gonna quit in the last 5 miles ?? ;)
