I just rinse mine out then give them a good scrub with a bottle brush and a drop of washing up liquid, a good rinse and the jobs a good'un as they say.

I have read that bottles can pick up all manner of nasties off the road, especially in the wet when they can be sprayed from the wheels. All manner of muck can be washed off the fields into the road and get sprayed up onto the bottle which you then put to your mouth. I don't know how much risk this poses never having met anyone who claims to have been affected but it sounds like it could be true.

It only seems to affect me if I drink too much. This morning I feel so bad that I've had to have a kip on the settee. I haven't been out on my bike since Boxing Day, so those germs must be powerful.

A few germs do you good.
I agree, but getting the right amount can be a little tricky.^_^

+1 on Camelbak Podium bottles. I either give it a quick rinse or a wash through with the normal washing up and it's good to go. Having had cheap plastic bottles in the past I can tell these are worth the money.

Thanks guys, I am now paranoid for the new year!

I have been using the same bottle for a few years now, and tend to just rinse it out when I re-fill it. Occasional it gets chucked in the dishwasher. I have never noticed the water tasting funny, and have drank it when its been stood for a couple of days and I forgot to refill it.

I hadn't even thought of the crap coming up off the road or fields either, and I ride through farmers yards sometimes! I sense a NY resolution coming on!

hope you are not thinking about fresh water, washing a bottle or that crap off your bottle. just think about all the harm that will come to your body if you start drinking clean water... that daily dose of germs... you will end up ill from not having them!

Animal urine is not nice - you certainly don't want it in your eyes which is something to consider if you are in the habit of giving your face a quick swill from the bottle on a warm day.

I've not bought a bottle for years, but one I have has a hinged lid over the outlet - one of those might ease your paranoia a little.

You make me feel much better.
The other week when I coughed going uphill and my upper set of teeth fell out and landed on the wet dirty road. I washed them off with drink from my bottle before popping them back in.

My oldest ones are about 5 years old, I think.

They usually (but not always) get emptied and refilled before/after each use, the ones I use on the MTB get rinsed under hot water if they're covered in a thick layer of dust, and they get put in the dishwasher occasionally - once a month type occasionally.

I used to refill mineral water bottles to drink at home, but moved onto proper dishwasher-safe sport bottles after I spotted the ring of mould growing round the neck of one of them.
