It would be interesting to see what would happen if that piece of wood was varnished, stuck on a pedestall and sold on "not on the highstreet" or something, would it sell for that much? I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Ivy grown round less durable wood which has since rotted away. Often seen round Morecambe Bay, and presumably elsewhere.
