I really dislike those portrayals of mob hits where the hitman knows he is going to kill his pathetic victim but acts all friendly, we can work this out. Not sure is they ever do this or if mob hitman learn from the movies.
Most mobsters and gangsters have bits missing inside where normal humanity lives yet people glorify them as heroes.

Did you know, Paramount wanted Ryan O'Neal for the part?

No, I didn't... I'm going to have to read the Trivia section on IMDB now! There goes my afternoon ^_^

You could say the same about Richard III or Iago; it's not a new thing, though you could argue medieval aristos and royalty were pretty much the same as gangsters in any case

Also Henry VIII killing wives, advisors and friends. Basically anyone who got in his way.

Like anyone who says the Kray’s were the good guys, I struggle with any film that glorifies violence but I dont think the Godfather films do that.

I would say much of the power of the film is that you start off rooting for the Corleones, particularly Michael, but by the end you realise the utterly evil and corrupt nature of the their world; a bit like Dick 3 really. Breaking Bad is similar progression

Agreed.

I'm currently watching The Shield again, and that works the other way round...
We learn in the very first episode that the 4 cops in The Strike Team are totally corrupt; in fact they murder a fellow cop who is investigating them. From this low point we get to like aspects of them despite what they do!
