The Godfather

The only movie that could possibly challenge The Godfather as the greatest film of all time is......The Godfather II.

The book is fantastic and the BBC once broadcast a version of both films combined but edited and shown chronologically so there's none of that back-forth thing you get in both blockbusters.

It established Pacino, De Niro, Duvall, Caan and Keaton as superstars on the same level as Brando and justifiably won numerous Oscars.

I adore both films more than any other movie ever made and I can't see that changing.

The Wolf of Wallstreet is the most swearing mainstream film, with 569 f-bombs. That’s over 3 per minute.

I know that all the 'cocaine' they snorted in that film was actually ground up Vitamin B tablets.

Probably because it was one of the earlier "mafia" movies it had to set the back-story, which makes it feel a bit long-winded, whereas later "mafia" movies didn't have to set the back-story because a) by then it was by then an established "genre", and b) the Godfather had already done the hard work.

G2 is the best one IMHO.

Good later "mafia" movies of a similar ilk would include Goodfellas and Casino. Alternative personal viewpoints from other afficionados may be available

The Irishman is another one I would lob in for consideration

I’m a huge fan of The Godfather movies. But only 1 and 2. I watched 3 but barely got through it. I found it boring and some of the acting was atrocious. Of 1 and 2 I think 2 is the best. Some of the best scenes in 2 are the flashback scenes when Corleone was young. And it is one of the few movies I can watch over and over and over again. The first two are two of the best movies ever made in my opinion. Ironically I heard an interview with someone, maybe Pacino, who said that the cast all thought the movie was going to suck while they were making it. How wrong they were.

The best and most hysterical scene in that movie was the Lemmon 714 scene with the “delayed fuse”. He went straight to the cerebral palsy phase. Reminds me of some friends in high school in the late 1970’s who sampled some of them. Such a great movie.

What is your opinion on fratricide? In general I don't approve of it, although I often think Harold Godwinson should have offed his brother, Tostig, the first time he betrayed him.

The final scene is superb cinema. When Michael lies to his wife about killing his brother in law.

She knows she’s being lied to, We all know she is being lied to.

The framing of the office door with her on the outside. The generals giving praise to the new Don, then the door is gently closed in her face as she realises the evil she is involved with.

The only scene I can think of is the Vegas prostitute who they kill to frame the Senator.
she is regarded as expendable.

Goodfellas shades it for me.

Fun fact - Joe Pesci's "Do you think I'm funny" scene came about when he told Scorsese a story about when he (Pesci) told a mobster he was a funny guy. The mobster took offence. The scene was actually directed by Pesci and only Pesci and Liotta knew what was going on. The reactions of the other nonplussed actors around the table are genuine.

This scene in the restaurant is superb. At about 4 minutes in the camera fixes on Al Pacino as the noise of the train wheels screech. You can see him weigh up his options and make the fateful decision, and it's all conveyed to the viewer by his facial expressions. Incredible acting.
