It was originally a pipeline carrying structure, but converted to a footbridge, in the late 80s/early 90s

The ox-bow' lake was created when the River Calder was diverted, in 1838 , due to the building of the railway embankment, for the Leeds & Manchester Railway, as can be seen in the OS map in the 'Geograph' link
