We've a trip coming up soon with a bunch of friends. We usually take the tent but as it's going to be cold we will sleep in the van (assuming the bed system arrives). Going to be a mix of full on campers, vans with a futon, camping cars and tents.

The Vangear bed is fabricated and should be with me on Wednesday. They have made improvements to the Transporter version and I've been told this will be in the Stelantis version (basically the bed boards are now hinged and fold out). Gives me time to faff about with the layout before the first trip.

Nearly a camper. Just got to flip the base so the holes line up with the load anchor points.

Base flipped. Supplied bolts are 15mm too short to fix it to the anchor points on the van ! Probably fits the lower spec models with a hard floor, not the ones with carpet and extra insulation. Replacement bolts requested !

Had to get the saw out. The supports that fit under the chairs, the right one fouls the mechanism that allows the chairs to slide forward (the red pull handle on the rear of the seat), so you can't use it. Had to chop a 3x5cm rectangle out of it. Again, I've got the posh seats, so probably not been fitted to my model in testing ! I've let the company know and they have asked for pictures. One of the errors they have made is the legs that support the bed when folded out, can't be stored away where they thought they could be when you've got to swap the base over. Obviously, they haven't fully tested the new bed.

There will be pics of the bed folded once I get the longer bolts - I could pop to B&Q, but not when this has cost a fair wedge of money - they can send me two. I could have made it myself, but not in my current condition and it wouldn't have been finished as well. I'm going to have to sand down the bit I cut out as it's messy compared to how the rest of the ply is finished off.

We know quite a few folk from my wife's swimming group that are going camper/van conversions. Ranging from a C3 Picasso, Caddy, a fair few T5/T6's in various conversions from builders van to full pop top. One friend's van, a T6 has the fancy wheels and a rugged roofrack basket with the spare wheel up there, looks the part, but inside there is just an airbed !

One friend has had a few vans in the last two years. Had an older Vivaro they traded in for a Vito. The Vito got crashed into, so then bought a converted Traffic, engine blew up. Sold kitchen and rock and roll bed to recoup some cash, now got a builders T5, bit 'gnarly' but it's had endless amounts spent on maintenance to the dot - the chap had a spreadsheet etc. My friend snapped it up - 180k miles on a 1.9 PD with 86 wheezy BHP. It's insulated and lined so they are chucking in a futon, and are looking to buy another friends swivel base for the passenger bench.

PS I don't have a folder !

+1, but I'd need an amazing jack for 3.5 Tonnes.

Mine is only 2 tonnes. It's an AA job anyway as I don't think there is even a jack or wheel nut spanner, just a compressor and gunk. Come to think of it, my wife's car is the same. Touch wood, never needed to use it.
