Ronhills! I think I'm past the woolly tights stage. with cheapo sports world cycle shorts underneath.
You're just jealous Rollinstock, I'm tempted to post a picture...except the chain looks way too clean - someone will think I'm serious. A picture of my Panache would be better...although it might make grown men weep. And hands off the fig rolls .. they're mine all mine:rolleyes:

"Im normally quietly pleased with myself if I manage to tac another meagre 2 or 3 miles onto the end of mine"

I'm a bit haphazard I'm afraid. I find these training schedule thingys impossible... how do you add 10% of a ride ..go round in circles? and the weather varies the effort so much. I tend to stick at the same routes for a bit and then make the effort to find longer ones. It's probably better to plan but I have to go with the flow otherwise it gets too stressful. What always surprises me, even though I've read it over and over, is that a) concentrating on pedalling faster at minimal effort and b)drinking and snacking meant that I went faster (all of 14.5mph - I'm not a speed merchant) and didn't feel so tired at the end.

Apols, Im a bit of a statto geek. I just love measuring improvments in distance/speed/hill climbs whatever. Thats just me!

Haphazard is good; I find you achieve more that way anyway!

I don't stick to any kind of a strict schedule; its more I'll generally just aim to complete a 30 miler this week, 40 the next, 50 after that or whatever. If I do miss, well never mind, at least I completed x, its another one under the belt regardless, the weather/diet-prep/late-night/hangover was probably a factor in why, I'll hit it next time.

I guess in some ways I'm lucky in this regard; I tend to "out-and-back" rather than "loop"; I'll aim for a point I know to be 20 miles away or what have you with the intention of getting there, turning round and coming back; which then gives you your 40 for example. Doing it this way means I can either push on a little bit further than my turnaround point if I'm feeling good at the half way mark, or alternatively vary my return leg to be a bit more indirect so as to add on another few miles; that way if I do over cook myself at least I'm still on my way home.

Although the image of just cycling around in a tight circle at the end of my street just waiting for the odo to tick over has tickled me for some reason.

I don't know why but I quite like going in circles ...I think I'm not much good at turning round and going back! I try not get too hung up on times and stuff, I don't take the bad days so well then and anyway winter average speeds are so affected by wind speed and direction, well that's my excuse anyway. Struggling a bit this week, got an infection last week that's lingering despite best efforts, didn't go out on my usual Monday jaunt and missed the fresh air. Got out today for short ride on new old bike and had real hassle with gears, don't think it was just me. Ah well swings and roundabouts, beautiful day anyway.

Stick to the roundabouts and forget about the swings, you'll have less bother with the gears. Well done on the 50.
