Isn't that bit also what the track pump head clamps onto when you flip the lever?
My Topeak twin head needs to be pushed down onto the thicker part of the valve. If it is only pushed/clamped over the narrower threaded part it will allow air to leak. The rubber washer may well clamp onto that part when the lever is flipped, but I think more wear is caused by the abrasion of pushing ythe head onto a threaded valve stem. The threading is totally unecessary anyway.

Probably with a stem that long. I think the locknut is to that the valve doesn't sink into the rim when pushing a push-on head onto a near-flat tube, but with that stem, you can probably just push the tube back from the tyre side to stop it escaping!

Yes think you're right, I use shorter (standard ?) ones and it's not a problem. After all aren't a lot of schrader valves much the same?

Another Halfords 5 for a tenner user here. Also with them being shrink wrapped they are much more useful for getting in to the saddle bag. I won't use Specialized any more, too many of them have gone around the valve and they are £6 each in my lbs!

Stops the crap getting on them so you can undo them when you need to.
Stops the crap that would get on them from getting in your pump head or blown into the tube?

They protect the tube when it's folded. Not much use otherwise - I throw them away when I put the tube in the tyre. So .... no threaded collars, and no dust caps for me - what a rebel!

I took up the same offer. Two lasted for about 7 months (4000ish miles) but I got a nail through the rear on the way home last night. Tried fitting the spare I had with me (still wrapped in the plastic and rubber band) and it let me down, just wouldn't inflate. I haven't checked the reason yet but from now on I would recommend a test inflation of any tube before carrying it as a spare. It left me feeling really deflated:wacko:

Have met three 26" Tesco ones and no problem - fitted to a friends bike and as far as I know still OK 3 years on.

Generally I don't buy many as they go on 'til irreparable or given away, however:

The only tubes I've had a problem with were a batch of 10 continental bought in 2010, 8 of which have had to be binned because the weld between the valve and tube has failed. One still in use and one not tried yet.

Have one Poundland one, OK and cheap but doesn't roll up small enough for use as a spare in my toolbag* so it goes in a pannier on longer rides. Schwalbe seem to go on for ever but not cheap, my one and only Halfords one was OK and cheap, and is now back in the toolbag after a puncture repair last year.

I think the faulty Tesco ones in the OP were probably as much a case of bad luck as were my Continental ones. I couldn't extract a refund for those either.

*Poundland's seem very thick compared to normal tubes. Saw them in the shop and decided to try one.
