I love posts like that - stuff that we don't need to know, but it feels good to know and can be used to bore people to tears for a laugh

Anyone who doesn't wear a helmet should have seen the fractured skull fatality I witnessed a few years ago.

I wear a helmet at all times, even when off road, and am instilling the same self-preservation factor in my four-year-old son.

There was a request not to turn this into a pro / anti helmet thread - please observe this request...

The problem with vents and lightness is that it is self-defeating...

Helmets rely on an amount of absorbent material to lessen the impact.

By reducing the amount of material (replacing it with vents) you lessen the effectiveness of the helmet. Additionally if you replace absorbent material with a kevlar / carbon fibre skeleton you are replacing the ability to function.

This is why so few helmets pass Snell testing .... todays helmets offer LESS protection than ten years ago.

They look better and are lighter, but one really should question whether placing these as a priority over effectiveness is a sensible thing to do?

One thing to bear in mind when buying a helmet is how well it fits. Different makes have different shapes (round heads v. long narrow heads). If you want to wear a helmet it makes sense to find a brand that fits well.

I'll show you mine

OK, so I have a few. One old one (retire them after about 5 yrs.) I use with a hand weight strapped to it with a toe strap, for neck excercises.

In use, I have an (orange/blue/white) Bell Ghisallo: cost £60, and a cheap Giro Indicator: cost £25. The Ghisallo is my "event" helmet. I use the Indicator for commuting.

Both have the exact same stickers inside the shell, announcing they comply "with U.S. CPSC Safety Standards for Bicycle Helmets for Persons Age 5 and Older." Another notice reminds "No helmet can prevent all head injuries or death." That's a good thing to remember.

Both helmets are Made in China. The Bell fits better.

BTW, I always wear a cycling cap -- of which I have a vast collection going back 25 years or more -- under my helmet. Keeps the naked dome from burning in stripes in summer. Add water, it acts as radiator. Keeps me warm in winter.

I have Pin's in the left hand side of my head where my cheek bone broke in 3 and pin's and wire keeping my knee together. The thing is my face would not of been saved if I had a helmet on and my knee would of been if I had knee pads on. So do I use them no.
