funchal yep - one of the Pestana hotels - had every intention of hiring a bike but it seemed a bit of a con , and when we went on a day out trip , found out the old road had been in eroded in places so only choice seemed new road and tunnels I decided not to bother , the trip we went on took us up one mountain that must have been 20% most the time for about 3000ft - didnt pass one bike ! think that speaks volumes
